First off, let’s define our little community: We are artists, fans and industry professionals. And every single one of us is a music lover. We’ve got a nice diverse and dedicated scene happening here on OurStage, and we’re pretty for real about keeping it that way. All we ask is that you remember that we’re each here because of that passion for music. We have differences of taste and of opinion, but we all work toward the common goal of new music discovery. OurStage exists to make that kind of discovery easier.
So, as you move about OurStage – uploading, listening, judging, and interacting – please keep in mind a few simple rules:
President Lincoln’s immortal words are as relevant today, here on OurStage, as they have been at any time or place in history. To that end, we ask you to be respectful of other people. Listen, if you use OurStage enough (and you should), you are going to come across someone you disagree with. It happens. Our stance is that debate and criticism are healthy things. Any good artist should be willing to hear feedback. But do it constructively and take a moment to consider your motivation. If it’s anything aside from “I want to help the artist or the community by making this comment,” don’t bother. Because otherwise, you’re being a jerk. Ask yourself, what would Abe do?
Being passionate about music is something we understand completely. But please stay positive or keep it to yourself. Try to keep things in perspective. There is nothing happening here that is worth losing your cool over. If there is a problem, just let us know and we will happily help resolve it. Disparaging, negative or slanderous comments about fans, artists or industry professionals via blogs, email or any other OurStage medium is very un-Dude and will not be tolerated.
Don’t upload material (audio, video, photos, writings, etc., etc.) to which you don’t own the rights. Moms would be very disappointed. If you see someone else using material that isn’t their own, please flag it. If someone is using YOUR material without permission, please fill out a DMCA notice and we will take appropriate action.
In addition to staying cool, you should be active on the site. The more you upload, judge, spread the word, and check out other artists, the more action you will see in return. We have some seriously legit prizes for artists and fans alike. Fans can win just for listening to and rating music – all while helping their favorite artists find success and a wider audience. Artists who are active on the site, who keep their profiles updated, and who enter competitions regularly are 100% more likely to gain new fans than those who don’t.
This is an easy one. Artists, please make sure you’re entering your songs in the proper channels and competitions. If it’s a hip-hop song, don’t enter it in the rock channel. If you’re a dude, don’t enter it into a competition for female singers. Channel uniformity = better channels = better fan experience = more fans = more music discovery. We ask all users to help us police the site by flagging material that is somewhere it shouldn’t be.
Also, if you have an opinion to express about politics or religion or any other non-musical subject, please do so in song form, because that’s what OurStage is for. We’re sure you can find many other forums out there where people want to read your manifesto on the economy so that they can SCREAM AT YOU about it, but that’s the kind of noise we don’t want here. It’s distracting and we’re trying to listen to music over here, man.
As always, don’t hesitate to write to our Community Team with any questions or concerns. Now go and dig on some new music.
