Description

"Song for Joyce Kilmer" was inspired by the Joyce Kilmer poem "Trees" which I had to memorize in grade school. The poem begins with the following line: "I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree." Steeped in tree-centric nostalgia, I also began to think of Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree. The result is the first person narrative of a tree that watches the world change around her as she is left behind and eventually cut down. -Kim Dicso

Lyrics

You used to think that you’d never see A poem as lovely as me You climbed in my arms and I held you quietly Until it got dark and you had to leave You’d see me often and tell me your dreams That you’d move away and see other things But you promised to visit and see how I was But time changed things, it always does Don’t cut me down Don’t sell me out Don’t cut me down I’m still alive My friends all got taken but I managed to stay Until I got in the way You walked by as they poked and they prodded me But turned and walked off when friends called you away Don’t cut me down Don’t sell me out Don’t cut me down I’m still alive Today is the day and there is a crowd I’m the last one standing here now I see that you’re there with your eyes pointed down I lose sight of your face as I hit the ground You cut me down You sold me out You cut me down But you’re still alive
