Debra G is a professional singer/songwriter, performer, and vocal coach with 17 years of diverse vocal and performance experience and extensive college level training in classical voice, vocal technique, opera and recital performance and vocal pedagody. Debra G is a professional singer/songwriter, performer, and vocal coach with 17 years of diverse vocal and performance experience and extensive college level training in classical voice, vocal technique, opera and recital performance and vocal pedagody. Since graduating from the University of WI, Oshkosh in 2001 with a degree in Vocal Performance, Debra G has constantly pushed herself to diversify her vocal and performance style. In 2001, Debra G started to expand her musical vision through songwriting and playing guitar. This was inspiration to move to Minneapolis, MN and to start performing her original alternative acoustic funk-rock as Debra G. In 2004, Debra G released her first professional self-titled album “Debra G”. Throughout her years of performing in Minneapolis, Debra G has been a featured guest vocalist and has recorded with several local twin cities bands like, Root City, Nathan Miller and The New Congress. With these bands, Debra G’s had the opportunity to open for national and international acts including, Buddy Guy, Morris Day and The Time, Blues Traveler, and Tower of Power. Debra G has appeared on several local Minneapolis/St. Paul television stations such as channel 4 WCCO morning news, KARE11 Showcase Minnesota Homegrown, Rock Watch TC Musique, and for the Town Square Television program "Amp it UP!". Three of her songs from her self titled album "Debra G" are to be featured in the independent film called "The Prick" directed by Justin Hawkins coming out in 2010. One of Debra G’s songs, “The Plea” is featured on the Quickstar Productions compilation CD, “Chill Out” in 2009. Her song “Tomorrow” is to be featured on the next compilation, “Come Clean” in 2010. Debra G was also a finalist in the 2008 "We are listening" competition with her song "The Plea". Debra G currently sings lead in a progressive funk band called Copasetic (myspace.com/Copaseticgrooves) who released their debut album in 2006 titled “Everything is Copasetic”. Debra G also sings background vocals for a internationally recognized urban soul group called The New Congress (thenewcongress.com). She is one of three women who sing lead and background for the Devine Collection featuring members of Copasetic, The New Congress, 8Switch, Root City Band. In January 2010, Debra G performed Janis Joplin in the 3rd annual “Happy Birthday Janis! A Tribute to the Life and Music of Janis Joplin” concert with several outstanding musicians from the Twin Cities area. In July 2010, Debra G recorded an EP for a New York City musical called "White Noise", to promote for Broadway. In July 2010, Debra G with The New Congress performed as one of the featured bands at the Black Music Awards in Minneapolis, MN. Debra G is working on her second professional acoustic album, “The Boxer”. This album has been a work in progress for 2 years. The goal of this album is to inspire those who listen to not be afraid to take the next step to be the change they want to see in themselves. Debra G currently teaches and coaches voice, piano and songwriting at Swift School of Music in St. Paul, MN (www.SwiftSchoolofMusic.com) Other artistic projects she enjoys are painting and photography.
