Circumstance... it is what informs our paths... what propels us, what hinders us. It is the cornerstone of what makes us. Whether of fortune or not, it is the groundwork for everything that follows. Including expression. And it is in that expression where an artist is defined. “When my mother and father went away, it took a lot out of me. Then my grandmother had to leave two years shortly after that. My mother went away for six years and my father is still missing to this day. Since I was only four at the time, I missed both of them like crazy... but I pulled through... and used that as my motivation.” Born in the Philippines, raised everywhere from Kuwait, to France, to San Francisco, Genesis Ian is the embodiment of diversity and cultural richness... not just of person, but of sound. A singer/songwriter/guitarist/keyboardist/percussionist/producer, Genesis brings an array of talent to a variety of genres and styles, including Hip-Hop, Rock, Punk, New Wave, and Reggae. Son of musician Ramone Tzunakus, Genesis has been surrounded by extraordinary musical talent his entire life and career, having even performed with such musicians as Wilby Flethcher (drummer for Harry Belafonte), Dexter Koonts (guitarist for Miles Davis), The Roots, God Shave The Queen, and XOL. Genesis Ian is currently part of the production group "The Lab Ratz" which have already gone on to produce for Busta Rhymes, Rah Digga, Ty James (daughter of Rick James), and Spliff Star. “I write from the heart and real life experiences.” While Hip-Hop has become notorious and perhaps even synonymous with controversy through profanity as a means of expression, Genesis Ian as a songwriter has made it a point not to sell an artificial image or facade of edge, but rather reality and soulful truth. One of Genesis Ian's most poignant songs is "Rise", an ode to the hardships of his childhood. At four years old, his father and mother separated and left Genesis to live with his grandmother. They moved to a different country to find a better way of life. The track "No Harm" expresses Genesis' trust in the world. “I want everyone to be provoked through music... to understand our history, our love, our joys, our struggles.” As a musician, it is the essence of live music which Genesis Ian most wants to bring back. It is in the expression of passionate truth and raw energy which defines who Genesis is as an artist - an artist whose diversity and richness, cultivated over years of experiences, brings with him a wonderfully unique and vibrant sound to an ever evolving musical landscape.
