Lisa McCuiston Brief history of me: When I first started out, I was fortunate enough to go straight into the studio with a group known as Glass Ear. Karl Mirabella formed this band when he left New York and brought fellow musician Frank Funarro (drummer for Cracker). Although Frank was touring with Cracker, he managed to make a few flights out to Reno and record on the first album I was ever involved with. The style had a folky sound...as my voice had not quite matured. Karl's influence for the cd was Led Zepplin's 3rd album...which was acoustic. We brought in the violin on a song. I had classical training and thus was asked to debut it as another instrument I played. After Glass Ear dissolved, I was auditioned for a blues band known as BlueStone. This band brought me back to my roots. Being from Texas, it was bred into me. Blues, country, classic rock... home of Janis Joplin, Stevie Ray Vaugn and Buddy Holly...among other greats like ZZ Top and too many others to mention. I began to realize what the root of rock was and began to cut my teeth on a variation of soulful blues, and good ol' rock n' roll... The Glass Ear recording afforded me many different studio projects in the future to come. I became a hired studio musician through the support of a very dear friend of mine, Tom Gordon. I was quickly earning a reputation as a singer for hire and since have been hired to record for many artists from all over. You name a genre, I've sang it. In fact, commercials were not out of my relm either...as John Bankhead has employed me for different ads. He has also used me for different movie demos for productions he has in progress... BlueStone was a vehicle for me to pursue my true passion; rock music. BlueStone had an edgy sound. I incorporated the violin, but learned how to produce an effect that sounded like Jimi Hendrix; wah and all. There is only a trace of my classical training in my violin playing. It has now been morphed into an eery miniature electric guitar played by a bow with an affinity to destroy the instrument it's sliding over. After leaving the blues band, the bass player and I decided to create our own sound. We called ourselves Dirty Pretty. Why? Because we had a blend of crunching rock guitars with a helping of some pretty vocals. All in the same song, we might go from slight sad vocals, to aggressive 'kick ass' vocals. Hence, Dirty and Pretty..... Dirty Pretty went on for about 2 solid years. I left the band in pursuit of a deeper calling. The music is all I want to do. The expectation of others to see things my way didn't exactly go over very well... I had to leave for my own growth at this point. There was to be no more relying on others... I've been told that the blues is still hidden in my music. Musicians tell me I have an alternative blues sound. I can work with that! During my down time from playing with bands, I've worked with the likes of some amazing musicians: Kenny Aaronoff (drummer for: John Mellencamp, studio musician for Melissa Etheridge, Michelle Branch, and MANY others), Paul Bushnell (bass player for: Elton John, Sheryl Crow, Faith Hill, Jewel, Leanne Rimes, and MANY others...) Here I am today as a solo artist. I still record with other artists for studio projects and consider myself a 'gun-for-hire". My name is Lisa McCuiston (Ma-qwis-ton). I have a name that is hard to pronounce when read. I am fully aware of that. But I will repeat it as often as necessary to be heard.........
