Pale Young Gentlemen formed in a large unused bedroom in Madison, WI in August of 2004. Brothers Michael & Matt Reisenauer and friend Brett Randall started out as a three-piece (piano, drums, guitar) but soon added Milwaukee-based musician Andrew Brawner (bass) and cellist Elizabeth Weamer. This unlikely group made an unlikely brand of music and speedily gathered the attention of local show-goers from coffeehouses to capacity crowds of 400+ at larger venues. The Onion was quick to take note: "Pale Young Gentlemen won over the audience with a combination of Ben Folds pop, Tom Waits oddity, and Eastern European influences." They have since shared the stage with Bishop Allen, Clientele, Beach House, White Rabbits, Cloud Cult, and the Ponys. Recorded in November of 2006 at Smart Studios, Pale Young Gentlemen's self-titled debut is a demonstration of musical imaginativeness. The songs, carefully thought out by songwriter and pianist Michael Reisenauer, range from dark tales of pulsing theatricality ("Fraulein", "Clap Your Hands") to delicate and powerful narratives depicting a shared human condition ("Saturday Night", "Single Days"). As their music has evolved, so has the band's lineup. Currently, the band consists of original members Brett Randall, Matt Reisenauer, and Michael Reisenauer, accompanied by Beth Morgan on cello, Gwen Miller on viola, and Derek Powell and Matt Pickart on violins. Drawing upon the folk-classical movements of Brahms, the evocative storytelling of Randy Newman, and the pop orchestration and sensibilities of Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney, Pale Young Gentlemen fashion a unique and compelling sound in the chilly atmosphere of Wisconsin's capitol."This band never missteps. Listen up." -Julie, Tiny Mix Tapes"An album so good, so truly impressive, that I have not been able to turn it off or get it out of my head." -Betsy Boston, Three Imaginary Girls"Pale Young Gentlemen are damn good, and I'm not certain why more people aren't talking about them. Here's the best band you don't know about." -Jared Hoke, 5 Acts"A good, solid, consistent record with professional musicianship, committed performances, and bright, catchy melodies...curies indie rock fans will find much here to revel in." -Alan Shulman, No Ripcord"If Apocrypha had not been released in March Pale Young Gentlemen would be the year's best album of its kind." -Eric Sams, Cokemachine Glow"Pale Young Gentlemen have come into the industry on their own terms, brandishing a sound that teeters on the brink of something big." -Patrick Gill, Lost at Sea"It’s a classic first album: A band unpretentiously tangling various genres they-or even listeners-thought would never sound so brilliant together." -Ryan Foley, Stylus Magazine
