Neo Geo’s Self-Titled is Engaging Electronic Rock by Live Music Insider
As the band’s lead vocalist Rainy Terrell explains, “Neo Geo means new earth,” which reflects the band’s desire to “create something new and special, something groundbreaking and different.” On the band’s self-titled album, out June 21 via Hardline Entertainment, Neo Geo does that, blurring genres, inducing comparisons to a broad spectrum of other artists and most of all, rocking hard with a distinct tinge of electronica. The first track on Neo Geo is perhaps the best introduction to the band one could expect; “Touch Me” wastes no time introducing the band’s high-octane blend of synth-rock, with driving distorted guitar and catchy keyboard riffing. Although past reviews have likened Terrell to other formidable female lead singers, she does have a style all of her own, with the ability to move between talking, singing and near-rapping with ease. “Lies and Butterflies” suggests a Nintendo-core influence, but there are also blasts of electric guitar and a fast-paced, rock-influenced chorus that will keep fans of harder, more traditional music pleased. If nothing else, the track - in itself and as a contrast to the album opener - indicates that Neo Geo is definitely doing something different and is far from a one-trick pony. “Can’t Catch Me”, a hard-edged track that opens with a relentless riff that razors through the first verse and takes the track to the soaring chorus. Notable tracks on the CD include “Leave Me Behind”, is perhaps Neo Geo‘s best offering, thanks to its catchy melody, engaging song structure and solid guitar work. NeoGeo show a rare, tender side on “Tonight”, in which Terrell sings with a sultry, whisper-like tone, supported by delicate piano. The seemingly unsuspecting track gradually rises and Terrell’s “I’m seeing through you tonight” is supported by chugging guitar. “The Metro” is heavy on the electronica, although it also infuses a grunge-heavy rock element, suggesting a fusion of No Doubt, Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails that, incredibly, wouldn’t be offensive to fans of any of those acts. This track is indicative of NeoGeo’s adroitness at creating new, unexpected sounds. The final track, “Masquerade”, has an intimate, singer-songwriter quality to it, as it features Terrell singing over elegant piano. The lyrics are emotionally charged and delivered with conviction: “I’ve made some mistakes and have to replace all of this anguish I love to hate. I can barely breathe…” Out of nowhere, the track then soars into a raucous, orchestral rock epic, with a guitar-led interlude that brings the track into the final chorus. Attempting to usher in a new, groundbreaking genre of music can be a difficult, thankless task, but Neo Geo must derive some joy from it, as the band simply does it extremely well. Despite infusing so many different musical influences into individual songs, Neo Geo is surprisingly accessible and definitely enjoyable. Neo Geo offers a plethora of distinct sounds but still manages to remain in tune with potential listeners enough to pull all of the styles into one refreshing and catchy musical escape from the mundane.

Southern California-native band Neo Geo is ready to shake up this summer’s Vans Warped Tour with an album full of fresh new material and a stage persona matched to the likes of Paramore and No Doubt. An active group since 2008, Neo Geo brings their electronic-rock sound together successfully on their new, self-titled album. The 11-track LP opens strong with the track “Touch Me”, about needing a significant other’s affection and contains haunting vocals and sound effects. “Leave Me Behind” is another standout track, featuring an impressively crafted instrumental intro and an eerie bridge. “Tonight” is one of the album’s slower songs, as it begins with softer guitar and drum beats before building to a higher energy in the chorus. In addition to the inclusion of a piano throughout the song, “Tonight” is a perfect indication of the musicality and versatility of the band’s music. “My Coma” is another album standout track that is full of Neo Geo energy, building up to a slower bridge before charging back up to a repeated chorus to finish the song. There is no denying Neo Geo’s electronic-rock infused album and their new material will surely have fans and new listeners who attend their shows at this summer’s Vans Warped Tour on their feet and singing along. With songs that are easy to enjoy and with a sound familiar to many rock music listeners, Neo Geo will without a doubt have fans pleased on the road this summer.

Our first Warped Tour was 2010, we saw Mike Posner who was amazing, Green Jelly was really entertaining, Manic Hispanic with Efrem Schltz, and Pennywise was as always amazing! 2. Are you rocking Warped with a bus or van? We have plans in the future to upgrade to a bus, but for now we're going to stick with our RV. 3. Who is included on your "road crew"? We have Justin Gulley from Funky Ja Punkys as our Tour Manager, Ty Adani as Co-Tour Manager/Drum Tech, Belle Popoff doing merch, John Milanovic as Guitar Tech, and Ryan Hizie as Guitar Tech. 4. What is the average amount of practice sessions before tour? How do you come up with setlist? That usually depends, we practice twice a week and usually before tour we practice our set however many times we think we need. We work on the setlist all together and decide what is most captivating first. 5. What are some of the most essential things you'll bring for the tour length? Last year we stopped at camping spots and Barbequed which is a must! We brought our longboard and cruised around, but the best thing we brought was our Golf cart which we used to carry gear and do laps around the parking lot with all our friends!! 6. What stage are you reppin' for Warped? We are reppin' The Kevin Says Stage! Holla!! 7. What are the top 5 bands you're looking forward to see play? Yelawolf, Foxy Shazam, Black Veil Brides, Lionize, Paramore, and Gym Class Heroes. 8. Its been known lots of bands get tatted on Warped, any ideas for new designs you're planning to get? Um haven't thought about much! Would love to get a tattoo while on Warped though! 9. What's something new that fans can anticipate from your band this summer on Warped?
