Godsey, Tanya - Telling Time by The Phantom Tollbooth
The artistry in Tanya Godsey’s Telling Time sets it apart. It is a thoughtful engagement with life befitting a Christian artist. Truth and grace, struggle and hope are expressed in subtle but rewarding ways. Some of these treasures were gained in the darkness, which gives them more luster. The excellence found throughout adds to the beauty and makes this a pleasure to hear. Godsey deserves credit for great writing, which includes a few co-writes. She also gets the best possible support with musicians like Jerry McPherson, Blair Masters and Chris Donohue, studio players with long resumes. It helps too when you have Scott and Christine Dente of Out of the Grey and Chris Rodriquez singing background vocals. Scott Dente also plays acoustic guitar and shares the producer credit with Ken Lewis. Together they are known as Global Genius Productions. The concept of story played a part in this release. In the fall of 2009, Godsey and her husband Jake read Donald Miller’s A Thousand Miles in a Million Years, which suggests that the elements in a great story also make for a well-lived life. Overcoming adversity to attain something is a familiar theme in the best dramas. Thankful for their comfortable life, but challenged by Miller’s thoughts, Godsey and her husband began praying for opportunities to live a better story not knowing what would come. A series of circumstances reinforced her calling to music but it also included a time of sickness, suffering and loss. It’s where lines like the following in “How to Be Thankful” come from: “Before I go to face my father's graves oh I pray ... Your storms would stay ... till they take what they came for ... take what You came for ... is this what you came for ... well take what you came for.” That maturity, which wants God to accomplish His purpose in the storm, informs the lyrics on this release. The same confidence is found in the music. The opening “White Page” with its warm piano notes and snappy production sounds like a Top 40 song. It was the fourth track, “Daylight,” that took me by surprise. The tension in the stanzas is beautifully resolved on the chorus. Here and on the title track she sounds a little country, reminding me of Susan Ashton. This release brings a new sound to the Christian market. The style and production is on par with the best mainstream recordings. You could hear these songs on the radio and not know they were by a Christian artist unless you were paying close attention to the lyrics. Ironically, there is more depth here than releases that have more explicit spiritual references. There is not a bad song in the bunch. Hopefully, this will get the attention that it deserves even though Godsey is not well known and her last release, Nothing Less Than Everything (2005), was six years ago. If she qualifies, she deserves consideration for best new artist. Michael Dalton

CD Review Title: Telling Time Artist: Tanya Godsey Label: Independent Release Date: September 20th 2011 This is the part of the job of being a review writer that I love; I get the first taste of new music before the rest of the public does. When you get that first listen and you find songs that are just enchanting, you know you have something special in your headphones. The album "Telling Time" by Tanya Godsey is the long awaited follow up to her 2005 release "Nothing Less Than Everything". Over the past few years Tanya has faced life threatening illness and over come it. Then she had to gather support to fund the recording and release for this albums release. She attributes being able to overcome these odds to nothing less than God's grace, strength and wisdom. With "Telling Time" she wraps her story in to some amazing songwriting. The first single "White Page" is almost like an anthem, challenging the listener to look at their life as a blank page in a book that with God we can write a fantastic story. How To Be Thankful" she shines as a singer / songwriter, Tanya Godsey has definitely lived each song she has written. This is just an amazing Christian folk rock album, well written, arranged, recorded and produced. If you're a fan of artists like Shawn Colvin, Sarah McLachlan, Rich Mullins, or Sara Groves; then give "Telling Time" a listen. It is just a soulful album by this female singer songwriter. Telling Time" has the potential to be a hit in the Christian Music charts and possibly crossover into the rock pop radio charts. It's definitely a labor of love for Tanya Godsey to put out this album, and it was a pleasure for me to be one of the first to listen to it. These songs will be in my music play list for a long time. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this CD a strait 10. It's well written, produced, recorded, promoted and packaged all by funds Tanya Godsey raised. As an independent musician my self I know what a struggle it can be to find investors and partners to record and produce a quality CD on a budget. "Telling Time" Album Review by Christian Manifesto
By Lydia Akinola GENRE: POP LABEL: INDEPENDENT RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 20, 2011 RATING: 4 OUT OF 5 My super quick search on Google for “Tanya Godsey” told me nothing. In the digital era that we live in I’m usually able to glean even the most useless of facts from the world wide web. Type in Godsey and you practically all one gets a myspace page, which again in today’s world means zilch. So I was on my own for this one. Tanya was going have to win my endorsements with nothing but her talents. And she did. Telling Time begins fantastically. “White Page” is everything you want in smart songwriting, and despite her lack of online presence – Godsey’s voice lets you know immediately she’s all there. The main idea – we’re pages God wants to write on – is poetically expressed. In “The Only Love”, it became clear that Tanya has one of those voices. You know …the kind of voice that can croon deeply. Or sing high. Or melt somewhere in the middle, all the while, remaining pitch perfect. I try hard not to be too jealous. “Daylight” is one of my favourite tracks. It is possible one of the most unconventional worship songs I’ve heard. And that is definitely a good thing. The chorus proclaims “Your strength will bring me life/ Your mercies they rise up with the daylight”. It may not be fashionable for the creative types to be explicit about their faith – but when they are it is so refreshing. It goes to show that originality needn’t always be sacrificed at the altar of praise and worship. Telling Time also dispelled another myth – indie song -writing and arrangements are overwhelmingly melancholy and depressing. In “How To Be Thankful”, Godsey reminds us that gratitude is an essential attitude even in the midst of adversity. It is a beautiful message, and the lyrics are enhanced by some fantastic male guest vocals. It is a simple message and a simple song but not a simplistic one. This, I believe, is where Tanya’s strength lies. Although there is room for improvement, (with her clarity, at times it feels like Godsey is swallowing her words) subsequent listens cemented my initial reaction – Telling Time is a true find. “You Make Everything Beautiful” epitomizes all that is praiseworthy about Tanya Godsey’s career. It is uncomplicated, honest music. Those who love the genre won’t be able to resist Telling Time, but then again, neither will those who don’t. Review title provided courtesy of Tanya Godsey Music
