2009 saw Puerto Rico's Aura Azul take full flight over the Caribbean Sea with their self-titled debut album. Mixing Iron Maiden-esque Heavy Metal with their native tongue being Spanish, they effectively make Hispanic Metal, a retro-combo of Latin America and Metal. Not so much like Breed 77 from Gibraltar who went to use the flamenco style. None the less Aura Azul is flying the flag for Puerto Rican Metal and is probably one of the best from the island dependency. [9] RHYS STEVENSON

Debut album for the young people of Porto Rico ! After two demos made in 2004 (Busca Tu Alma) and 2005 (El Angel Vengador), so this is the true start for AURA AZUL ! The South American style is immediately recognizable! Many desires and passion but some approximations! This is surprising because some titles are very good (including voice) as Maestro De La Oscuridad and Gladiatores ... Other passages have small limits "false" especially in the song as the first title, La Copa De La Ira, the very IRON MAIDEN Naufragio and above Como Un Rayo De Sol (there are passages really hard to bear!). Yes, , IRON MAIDEN is the main influence of the group, and the musical parts are well made, dynamic, energetic and Heavy! Hear from another 8 De Octubre or El Angel Vengador to convince you. AURA AZUL is the beginning of his career and this album will serve to show its potential in the world 'sUnderground (especially those of you sensitive to South American groups). is missing a big production, more rigor and mastery level compositions (because the technology is there for sure) and especially a singer who avoids excessive force and can better adjust his voice (it really weak point of the album). But we have to start somewhere and this is sometimes a matter of using ... I will remember for the strong positive Maestro De La Oscuridad and Gladiatores ( JUDAS PRIEST and its side early 80’s), and La Sombra De Faraon, and very good (see excellent) musical passages on most titles. Listen to the sumptuous solos on Heavy Metal and Utopio De Una Diosa ... La Sombra De Faraon! Work, more work and time will allow AURA AZUL to mount a notch in the unforgiving world of theUnderground ! For the moment the group has 70% of its capabilities and look forward to more! This is a traditional take on metal in the style of classic Iron Maiden. There’s an epic vibe that makes it impact upon you much in the same way as Maiden does. The album also contains some of the youthful excitement that made things like Killers such enjoyable ventures. However, the riffs don’t have quite the same amount of power, though it is present. The vocals are sung in Puerto Rican, which gives the album a slightly different flavour from your typically English sung metal music. They manage to swerve around the possible impediments of the language barrier with some enthralling musical moments. There’s just the right amount of passion to be found that would carry a band into truly enjoyable pastures. The songs go through catchy verses to proceed to even more memorable verses in a decidedly accessible fashion. This album should particularly appeal to those seeking some they can easily appreciate and have fun with. Aura Azul are fairly approachable in style and have throwbacks to one of metal’s most appreciated outfits, so fans should find it easy to fit in with what’s being performed. The main riffs are uniform and one should be able to grasp them fully, but that doesn’t stop them from having large amount of passion take control. The final track here “El mago, elreino el imperio yel fin pt. 1” ends the material on a high note as there had been an increase in the amount of impact of each previous song. The important thing is that the band love what they’re performing and show a good degree of class and style, even if the music isn’t incredibly innovative. The songs gallop along as the guitar work maintains an up-tempo style. Overall, this self-titled work is entertaining despite being slightly derivative and not necessarily as powerful as it could be, which might be partially due to the production values to be found. Still, Aura Azul come recommended to Maiden and metal fans in general.

Local heavy metal band Aura Azul opened for the night. The venue was still about at only a fifth of its capacity when they hit the stage, but even then it was still probably the largest crowd that the band has ever played in front of. They possessed lots of energy and they captivated the crowd, most of which probably didn't even know that there was a vibrant local scene. Lead vocalist Edgar impressed many with his voice and commanded everyone's attention. The band's blatant Maiden inspiration shined through, from Hommy's guitar solos to Emma's galloping bass playing. They silenced any critics they had (who probably had never even heard a single note of their music) and there's no doubt that the young band left making many new fans.

Aura Azul are a Puerto Rican heavy metal band, who have recently released their second album, “Beyond The Doors of Time”. Given the fairly positive reception of their debut album (see our review of it here: http://themetalreview.com/?p=4731 ), it was going to be interesting to see how Aura Azul had improved and developed their sound since their last release. The first track on “Beyond The Doors of Time” is Heritage, a short introduction to the band and what they stand for: Iron Maiden-esque riffs and ripping guitar solos. Immediately a few things are obvious from this first track: the production value of their recording has vastly improved from their last album, and the band are on whole new level of tightness. The next track is Dying Shelter, and it opens with an epic scream, singer Edgar’s vocals sounding even better than on the first album. The song has a really thrash pace too, as do many of the songs on this album, but there also plenty of old school heavy metal moments, the band staying true to their influences. On top of the excellent and much improved vocals, the drumming is sound fantastic, and the album is full of awesome drum fills. The third track is the title track, Beyond The Doors of Time, and it has a very mid tempo pace, and a real Ghost of The Navigator (as in the Iron Maiden song) feel, brooding and ominous. The chorus is catchy as hell ,and the there is an awesome but brief bass fill. The guitar solo on this track is pretty outstanding, well phrased and well executed, and with the help of some dramatic and operatic vocals the song has a powerful ending. The final track on the album is The Penitent Man, which clocks in at nine minutes. It begins with a slow and ominous intro, with a piano line and whispered vocals, eerie and reminiscent of Iced Earth’s Dark Saga in many way. As Edgar belts out the line “THE SCHARLET WHOOOOORE!” power chords break in, and the tension starts to rise before the song breaks out into a pounding mid tempo rhythm. The chorus is powerful and catchy, and six minutes into the song there’s a strange kind of funk breakdown, with some delectable bass work and a totally ripping guitar solo, before there’s another rhythm change and another guitar solo that shreds away at light speed with maximum intensity, before a riffy breakdown and a return to one last more ominous verse and one final chorus as the album ends with a mighty and powerful scream.

The production on this album is much better than the first one, and you can hear a more focused band, with lots of potential, these guys can really play, and they don't over do it with boring 20 minute songs and solos. You can tell high quality musicianship in each one of these songs,is clearly obvious why they were handpicked by Iron maiden to open for them in San Juan. Aura Azul is clearly one of the best metal acts from Puerto Rico and this album proves it, they sound hungry, sharp, and heavy. They come very recommended for fans of Iron Maiden, Mercyful Fate, Helloween, and Primal Fear.
