Portrait of Vo Cal
Born and raised in Henderson, NC,
Vo Cal has been captivating audiences since age 8. As a youth, southern gospel took him in as one of its own. The church youth choir is where he first learned he had a gift. Leading songs and doing solos every 3rd Sunday, he became a part of service you didnt want to miss. The reaction from the adults was unbelievable.

At age 13, with a stronger voice and more confidence, he began to write poetry. Mostly used as love letter material, he clarifies, as many teenagers do. The he found a way to put melody to his poetry and write songs. It wasnt until joining the school choir that he realized, not only the church folk love him, but so did his peers, especially the ladies. As a member of the basketball team, he would sing on road trips while listening to his CD player, not realizing he was being heard by those sitting in around him. As a high school athlete, he became one of the most sought after players in the state of North Carolina, from colleges all over. His high school superstar status on the court, conflicted with his superstar status in the choir stand and he had to choose. He learned so much about life through basketball, it was amazing. After transferring to Virginia Union University at age 19, he was ready to become a man. It was at Union, he matured to who he is today.
It was there he was also introduced to the very talented Mr. Gerard Thomas who helped mold his gift of music. Though basketball was my heart, music was my soul. He entered a studio for the first time and began recording his demo, which he wrote completely. Over the course of a few months he learned so much about his voice and music as a business and as an art. I
Soon after, he began translating those words to organized lyrics of experiences in his life. Growing up in a single parent home showed him a different side of life that has become very familiar in todays society. This allowed him to reach everyday, ordinary people directly and indirectly.
