Ask any South Dakotan about the weather of their home state and you will surely hear the reply, “if you don’t like it now, wait five minutes.” The same sentiment could be used in describing one of South Dakota’s premier musical acts, the Smoke & Mirrors band. The music of S & M can also be aligned to the varied terrain of its home state. Encompassing the peaceful drone of a running river one moment, and the monumental majesty of the Black Hills another, S & M wind through a variety of sounds and genres seamlessly like the free prairie wind.
Drawing influence from a wide array of artists and genres it would be impossible to pigeon hole the S & M sound. A typical S & M set will find the band dabbling in Irish folk, 1960’s psychedelia, Delta and Chicago blues, and the great Americana tradition of the United States
In an age of fabricated rock stars and forgettable singles, the Smoke & Mirrors band, hope to bring reality back into the fold and focus of rock music. Lyrical themes of hard luck, spirituality, relationships, and hope dominate S & M’s material.
With two albums (2006’s “Smoke & Mirrors and 2007’s “Trouble”) already self recorded and released, this rock train shows no sign of stopping! So come aboard, but don’t get too comfortable. There is no telling where this train is headed. But rest assured, it will be one hell of a ride!
