Convergent Evolutions: Going full circle for health Non-profit's events raise money to aid medical care by George Snyder Sonoma West Staff Writer GIVING — Cancer survivor Ananta has organized a series of fund-raisers to provide care to the sick. Photo by George Snyder SEBASTOPOL – When 36-year-old Ananta was sick last year and unable to pay her medical bills, her community of alternative healers, friends and artists came forward, unbidden to help her. Now, her cancer in remission, Ananta, the founder of the Sonoma County-based Convergent Evolutions is using music, fashion and art events to give back, both in terms of community but also help the sick of all medical persuasions get their medical bills paid. She and her board of 12 directors have just submitted their non-profit incorporation papers. All proceeds from event ad space sales or booth rental are allocated toward the production of each event. All proceeds from ticket sales pay both allopathic "western" and alternative practitioners who are providing care for those in both extreme physical and economic need. According to Ananta, in the six months or so Convergent Evolutions has been operating, at least 10 persons have enlisted their services. We're getting calls from all over the county," said Ananta. It isn't rocket science," she added, "we get business people to rent booths at the events in order to sell products, the money from the rentals help local musicians subsist and the proceeds from the door go to help the sick to pay their bills. She said the whole idea is based on a sustainable cycle and the idea that "you need to have a healthy community to have a healthy economic system. You need to have people. Already, she said, they have scheduled three events, the first, "Groove Sessions," set for tomorrow at 8 p.m. at 515 Orchard Street in Santa Rosa. Featured artists include Sky-I, Andy Graham and Ananta, who is trained in the cello, violin and electric violin. The others are "Folk Rock," with Gina Marie and Sebastopol's Hoytus Rolen, scheduled for November 7th and "Hip-Hop," scheduled for December 13, with G-Force, Sky-I and Distant Relatives. All tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door at 515 Orchard Street. A University of California, Davis, graduate in writing and production management, and a Sebastopol resident until she recently moved to Santa Rosa, Ananta, who follows a spiritual path related to Hinduism, and who owned her own photography business before she fell ill, said she was diagnosed with her disease last year. I was diagnosed with breast cancer which had spread to my liver and lymph system," she said, adding, "I couldn't get the health care I needed and I didn't know where my next treatment was coming from. After I was diagnosed I got sick really fast and didn't even know where my rent was coming from. But all of a sudden people were coming out of the woodwork to offer food, rent and a place to stay. She said took herbal treatments and supplements and naturopathic medicine, which emphasizes the body's intrinsic ability to heal and maintain itself. Naturopaths prefer to use natural remedies such as herbs and foods rather than surgery or synthetic drugs and emphasize a holistic approach to patient care, sometimes recommending patients to use conventional medicine alongside their treatments. It's ironic I was double diagnosed with cancer and Lyme disease – I was bitten by a tick while doing a landscape – and found myself very sick," she said. "But through the alternative methods and the help of my community I had the chance to focus on getting better. It was during that time when the idea of forming Convergent Evolutions came to mind. While lying in bed I though I would help others who are sick but without community support," she said. "The seed germinated in January of this year and in the process of getting better in the community of local people. Ananta said people might have health care and it might even be a great system, "but a lot of people find out they can't afford it when they really need help. Saying she is not pushing only alternative or conventional medicine Ananta added, "individuals follow the treatment they need. People know what is right for them. I'm not trying to change people, only trying to provide health benefits in a creative and positive way. You won't find me on a soapbox. A solo journey," she added, "starts from within.
