Autoverse is the brainchild of a hospital bed. After being hit by a van on Swamp Road in Morrisville, NY (November 2003), PJ realized that giving up things he loved for “adulthood” at 28 was utterly ridiculous, and promised himself that he would perform music again – in his way and on his terms. The compound fracture of his right arm, now aided by two metal plates, and his stapled head (coupled with vertigo), required a decent amount of recovery, which made the process slow, but Autoverse was finally born in the spring of 2005, when Patrick recorded a few demos in the garage of his lifetime friend, Dave, with former college band mate and drummer, Stu. The results were called “The Tennyson Sessions”.
Teaching, coaching, and a move from Syracuse to Rochester, made Autoverse nothing more than an intermittent enjoyment for PJ for awhile, although songs continued to be assembled and practiced during spare moments. A few days in the winter of 2008 found PJ back in Buffalo recording “Fending Bow”, which Hans DeKline of Man Bites Dog Mastering compared to Slint. Though slow in developing, the hospital bed pact never faded, and after refusing a handful of shows over the years, PJ jumped on an opportunity to play at Funk’n Waffles in July 2008. A 1300 day dream became a nerve-wracking event that night; Autoverse played its first show as a solo act, shaking through 6 originals. Still willing to play solo, but now sporting a full band, PJ is working with DL Shurtz (aka Dave) on guitar, J Lank on drums, and EMS, another former band mate, on bass.
Autoverse wears its Indie influences on its sleeve, drawing comparisons to Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, Guided By Voices, Archers of Loaf, and early Nirvana, among others.
