Back City Woods is a new band that gives old sounds a new twist. Playing out of Macon, GA, all three members are natives of Cochran, GA — a small town in South Middle Georgia. Back City Woods embraces their Southern music heritage: Bluegrass, Country, Southern Rock, and Blues are all given a renewed sound when played by musicians who listen to too much Indie Rock. Daniel NeSmith originally developed his chops on Blues music. His principle role in bands has been lead guitar, and he’s played everything from Blues, Bluegrass, Gospel, Hard Rock, to Classic Rock. In Back City Woods, Daniel has taken on the role as lead singer while anchoring the band with his percussive guitar work. Michael Collins is a self-taught, music theory nerd. A multi-instrumentalist who has played keys and drums, though never at the same time, for Gospel groups, bass for a Punk band, drums for an Industrial Rock project, and is returning to bass and adds the Bluegrass foundation to Back City Woods. He is also a published poet and writes many of the band’s lyrics. Steven Bridgers is a drummer’s drummer. He grew up in the Southern Gospel scene and played snare drum in his high school marching band. Building off his technical fundamentals, Steven traveled with Jazz groups throughout his college career. Back City Woods brings Steven back to his roots by allowing him to explore the shuffle beats and soaring vocal harmonies found in much Gospel and Country music, but he keeps the technical drumming in mind adding much intricacy to the music. While all three members of Back City Woods have chops and know when to let go into a full-on jam when the time is right, the band’s focus is songwriting. Their hard to pin-down sound has been compared to everything from Ryan Adams, Pixies, to Hot Tuna.
