About the Artist
MY NAME IS JON MANNING
I want to borrow your musical equipment and play shows in your living room, right before we have a slumber party and watch many dvds back to back. Sometimes there are people playing music with me, sometimes there are not. Lately it's been a lot more people than usual.
Blanket Truth, essentially Jon Manning, is an amorphous, folky, indie pop band based in Seattle, WA via Thousand Oaks, CA. They have released many, now out of print, cassette tapes since 2005 and have no intention no stopping. Spurred on by a love of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone and the Mountain Goats, Jon realized that it was possible to record songs with very few musical instruments and simple recording devices that can be found in most homes (hand held tape recorder, answering machine, boombox, etc). These songs have mostly been released on his own Lost Sound Tapes imprint, which has released tapes by other bands such as Red Pony Clock, Your Heart Breaks, and iji, as well as releasing tapes/CDs on Now Hereness Records, Sanitary Records, and Pop Monster (R.I.P.).
On the most recent tour of the east coast, Blanket Truth operated as a baritone ukulele & beatboxing duo, though it isn't unusual to see them perform as an ensemble, with as many as 6 members at a time. They traveled around car-less, via bus and ride shares in an attempt to tour while being environmentally conscious. Waste veggie oil powered transportation is next, but one step at a time!
Three years in the making, Blanket Truth finally has a full length album. Released on cassette and compact disc, the music contained on the two formats are completely different recordings, with an exclusive track on each. The tape is a solo, boombox recording and the CD is a full band, digital 8-track recording by Tory Fiterre of Cartoon Monster. Exclusive artwork can be found on both formats, both designed by Stacey Hamilton (www.mystace.ca
). All the best tracks from the inception of the band have been re-recorded and a bunch of brand new pop-infused baritone ukulele folk songs make up this 30 minute album. This is the 'good stuff'. Features baritone ukulele, electric guitar, bass, pedal steel, flute, cello, and lots of group vocals!
