Dapunksportif appeared in late 2004, in Peniche (Portugal). Their creative core is composed by João Guincho and Paulo Franco, long time partners in other musical projects, and producer Marco Jung. “Overdrive”, their first recording, received some good criticism, which made the band travel all over the country to play in music competitions and also to open for Xutos e Pontapés’ concerts, on the Três Desejos’ tour, which ended in Coliseu dos Recreios. Dapunksportif where warmly welcomed in Spain as well and made it to the top five finalists in the Iberian competition “Yamaha X – Band 2006”. They burned down the house in Super Bock Super Rock XL festival, in 2006, in Quinta dos Portugueses’ stage, playing with bands such as Tool, Alice In Chains, Deftones, Placebo, among others. “Ready!Set!Go!”, Dapunksportif’s debut album, produced by the band and Marco Jung, was released in June 2006 by Rastilho. Its seven songs, along with the “I Can’t Move” bonus video, leave us under the impression that we’re in the presence of a truly rock band: gutsy and strong rock music, with a stoner touch, supported by a powerful rhythm section, giving us fast grooves and guitar riffs. We’re talking about speed, motor vehicles, unexpected encounters, the need to get a one way ticket anywhere, about living every single day of our lives like if it was the last one and rock played with the powerful strength of a hammer. “Ready!Set!Go!” received excelent criticism by both Portuguese and foreign press and made it to Blitz magazine’s top 5 reader choices of the year. It also did very well in several music sites. Its single, “I Can’t Move”, was included in Antena 3’s playlist and its video premiered in Portuguese MTV’s Brand New. The video eventually became part of MTV’s playlist and it was chosen as one of 2006’s best music videos. This song was also included in a music compilation named “Novo Rock Português”, released by Chiado Records. Dapunksportif played more than 70 shows in both Portugal and Spain in 2007, namely Xan Xuan Beach Festival (in Avilés, Asturias), opening for Fu Manchu in Paradise Garage, playing in the first Alive festival, with bands such as White Stripes, Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, Pearl Jam and the “Kick Off the Rock Fest” tour, with Fonzie and Vicious Five. In the summer of 2007, Dapunksportif released their second single, “Private Disco”, which, once again, was included in Antena 3’s playlist. Its video was played in several TV channels. In late 2007, the band was invited to play in Antena 3’s acoustic music sessions, “3 Pistas”. After a full throttle start, with “Ready!Set!Go!”, “Electro Tube Riot” is released, once again produced by the band and Marco Jung. This is Dapunksportif’s second album, edited and distributed by the band and Lisboagência. Electricity takes the place of petrol now: the sound of the guitars heats up the city and wakes lethargic brains up. The music style is still very rock, with two powerful guitars and a not less powerful rhythm section, as before. The “old school” spirit from the seventies lies here, as well as some hard rock/heavy metal music from the eighties (no bad perms, though!). The drums (one of the most important parts of the process) are played by guests Marco Jung, Zé Carlos (Umpletrue, Wonderland), Fred (Yellow W Van, Oioai, Buraka Som Sistema) and Kalú (Xutos & Pontapés). The album’s first single, “Friends (come and go)”, was, once again, included in Antena 3’s playlist and Dapunksportif were invited to play a small acoustic show in this radio station’s anniversary. The song’s video was played several times in MTV and SIC Radical. Dapunksportif started a new tour afterwards, playing in Portugal, Spain, several summer festivals, The Levi’s Unbuttoned Event and a Vodafone Flash concert. Currently the band is preparing the third album and looking for record labels that might be interested. Regarding to this situation it’s important to know that the band owns all the rights of the previous releases. DaPunkSportif live are: Paulo Franco (Vocals and Guitar) and João Guincho (Guitar and backings), Zé Carlos (drums) and Donny Bettencourt (bass).
