Crafted in four recording locations, with 17 American and Jordanian artists over two time zones and 6000 miles, Hana Malhas’ debut release Shapeshift (March, 2010) is an introspective collection of songs that reinforces her cross-cultural collaboration, while staying true to her firm rooting in the indie folk‐pop sound.
With influences such as Fesit, Ray LaMontagne, and Laura Marling, her songs showcase an expressive vocal delivery that fluctuates between soft intensity and bold clarity. You may find yourself connecting to that voice, through words you’ve left unspoken – as a lover, an ex, a daughter, an outcast, or a witness. Hana explores the personal with fearless vulnerability, making observations about our multi‐layered human experience across cultures. She composes on piano and guitar, and invited a diverse range of musicians to layer the album songs with strong arrangements of instrumentation and harmony. The result is organic musical diversity from song to song, with threads of stylistic consistency tying them together.
She grew up in Jordan, a place with breathtaking desert mountains and rich sounds of an old language, and is currently based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Performing across venues in both regions since 2008, she’s shared the stage with national and local artists including Maria Taylor, Whispertown 2000, Chris Bathgate and Yazan Al-Rousan. Her live shows vary from a one‐woman setup, to intimate duo arrangements and full‐band configurations. Alongside her solo material, she has performed and recorded (on violin, piano, and vocals) with Nervous but Excited and (prior to 2006) with Lazy Sunday, sharing the stage with artists such as Melissa Ferrick, Ember Swift, and Chris Pureka. In May 2008, she released a 5‐track solo demo EP entitled Olive Tree.
