It's almost midnight as sound creeps from a dark corner in an empty bar. The bartender yells at the drunk who just wet himself as he danced aimlessly with his concoction of liquor while trying to drink away that week's labors. Soon it'll be last call and the night, like many before it, will be over.
Traveling from dirty bar to dirty bar, unloading, loading, setting up, breaking down, playing, screaming, singing, jumping, sweating; it takes its toll. The numbers are three and sixty-five. Three for the number of years that have gone by while playing the same sixty-five songs night after night.
Taken by a stroke of luck…no…a stroke of discipline, of dedication, our heroes look ahead to the future. With the crash of the late 90's and the recession that engulfed the music world as we know it, the fans look for a way out, a way to reestablish the anti-establishment fire within us that brought us the Greats who wrote those sixty-five songs.
Learning from those who came before and preaching to those who have yet to be crowned, Highway Jackson stands alone. The battle for retribution, the repayment of debts, the need for change and the hunger for a better scene encompass that which is the meaning of Rock, the meaning of Greatness. It is for that cause that our heroes set off on their crusade to battle a faceless enemy, pillage the town, and convert all non-believers into believers. "Leave Your Girl Pants at Home" Review (July 2007) by Maine Music Association
By: Conrad Deschenes... I recently attended a CD release party for the debut “Leave Your Girls Pants At Home…” by Highway Jackson, and knew I had to grab a CD to check out at home. I had seen the band before and had written them off as another 80’s sounding band, but fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised. Mixed and produced by John Wyman at The Halo in Portland, ME and mastered by John Roberts at Omnisound Studios in Nashville, TN, the disc has a top quality resonance to it. Highway Jackson consists of Kris Rodgers on vocals, Tyler Johnson and Brandon Reynolds on guitars, Corey Pacillo on bass, and Mike Bean on drums. Their bio says they have been together since high school, and they definitely reflect a consistent, tight comradery, which is then stuffed into their music, whether recorded or on stage. Highway Jackson’s sound could, technically, be categorized as 80’s music as I said earlier, but to do so is to limit oneself to much more. To say they sound like this band or that is wrong because they just don’t. Kris has said, regarding their sound, “It’s a cross between intellectual reading and hard-core porn, if that sounds like anything”. I tend to agree. The CD starts off hard hitting with “Souls Sold”, a progressive tune with beautifully timed breaks and fabulous vocals. I was particularly attracted to the solo in this song because of its uncluttered musical mix, allowing the lead guitar to have ‘center stage’. “Smothered” is the first of two ballads on the disc. The song contains excellent dynamics and exquisite harmonies throughout, and one gets the feeling that Kris is very passionate of the words he’s singing. “Love” has a simplistic feel to it, which is not always a bad thing. The track definitely has ‘that groove’ that gets your head bobbing along. Most prominent to me was the solo, where both lead and rhythm guitars are ‘up front’. Besides, this song has a cowbell! Now before you shake head no, it fits well in the song and is given its proper place. I found, by far, their most popular tune, “Train”, lives up to the hype. This song is right in your face, with lots of punch, and extremely tight. This track gave a chance for each band member to show off a bit of talent; vocals are strong, guitar work is exceptionable, bass and drums are distinctive, especially during the solo. Not many dynamics in this song due to the fact that the entire tune is high energy, with a capital E. My personal favorite line was, “Hey, well I took a trip to get my fix and now I’m next to sin.” Don’t ask me why. “Don’t Cry” is the second ballad, full of emotion and wonderful harmonies. Much like the other ballad, this song has great changes that don’t interfere with the feel, making it pleasant to listen to. Even the obligatory guitar solo was not harsh or distortedly overpowering, ruining the passion conveyed throughout. The last song, “Hand You’re Dealt”, is another in your face song starting with Mike banging the skins and setting the mood. The song has many layers and textures intertwined making me believe that this could be a huge hit for them. I was also drawn into the ‘long’ pauses of quietness in several places, showing off just how tight the band is together. I found Highway Jackson’s freshman disc, “Leave Your Girls Pants At Home…” very enjoyable, sounding at times like a kick ass hair band, and then like nothing I heard before. If you’re into beautiful, melodic ballads and banging, thrashing, hard-hitting music to bang your head to and possibly hurt your neck due to lack of self control, grab this disc, give it a listen (or two), then find out where Highway Jackson is playing next. As good as the CD is with the emotion and passion portrayed, seeing them live will send you reeling. Plans are in the works for a full-length CD in the spring of 2008. Into the Spotlight: The Dirty Bar Campaign(03/09) by The Maine Switch
Highway Jackson is a critic-proof band. With their brand of high-octane rock and roll, it is impossible not to cheer for a group which makes the groove sound so damn good. The Portland-based quintet toes a delicate balance between hair metal joy and grunge fuzz on its debut album “The Dirty Bar Campaign,” with stadium-ready riffs, righteous sing-alongs and bold fretwork. The disc starts strong with “So Fine,” setting the pace of what’s to come: a somewhat forgettable verse precedes a charging pre-chorus, the huge chorus and a loose bridge which allows plenty of room for guitar theatrics. Perhaps the best example of the formula is the soaring middle of “Kissless World,” which is far more fist-pumpin’ than the gentle title might imply. “Dangerous to the Enemy” is a blues boogie which would fit comfortably on an Aerosmith album. “Wash Away the Rain” rides a fast-paced riff to end the album on a high-flying note. Even the softer moments, such as the heavy ballad “No Time To Save,” is hefty enough to sit beside heavier fare. One element of the group which further harkens back to the classic rock feel it emulates is the pronounced presence of each group member. Just as everyone who picks up a Stones album can endlessly debate the virtues of Mick, Keith, Charlie and Ronnie, Highway Jackson fans can translate this devotion to the bell-clear sounds of the group’s setup. Vocalist Kris Rodgers effectively beams sunshine to the Chris Cornell school of rugged crooning, adding volume and pretty harmonies above the hard-rock bombast. Lead guitarist Tyler Johnson packs many swoon-worthy riffs into his attack, somehow sounding both contemporary and delightfully over-the-top in the most Slash-ian of ways. Rhythm guitarist Brandon Reynolds, bassist Corey Pacillo and drummer Mike Bean all work in perfect lockstep to create a solid sound for both vocal and axe riffing. This disc is not perfect. As noted earlier, if lyrical inspiration is critical to enjoying an album, avoid Highway Jackson’s shameless rock clichés, complete with earnest delivery about being down on your knees, having the devil in your eyes and how dangerous the band is. This is fare best saved for Hinder’s pen, but the record is so good that it is best to just sing along and party like it’s 1986. That said, just ignore this review completely. There was a lot of talk last year about rock's comeback: Metallica, AC/DC, and GNR led a pack of old-school, straight-ahead guitar bands who at least did pretty well at the cash register, even if they didn't exactly break new or original ground. All three hit the Rolling Stone Top 50 for 2008, but so did that Jonas Brothers album, so take that with a grain of salt. Locally, Loverless, This Way, and now Highway Jackson are forging a bit of a rock renaissance in Portland. While this is still an indie kind of town, soaring guitar solos seem like they're coming back into vogue. Jackson make their case next weekend with the release of The Dirty Bar Campaign, 10 songs of fiery riffs, soaring vocals, and heart-thumping bass drums. While, like the national set, they may not reinvent the rock wheel, they do make a good case for joining them in a few late nights running with the devil. In fact, with their album title, following on their 2007 EP, Leave Your Girl Pants at Home, I think they undersell themselves. While it's true they funded the disc with a series of cover shows in bars, dirty and otherwise, throughout the state, they don't really need to announce that to the world. And the album doesn't have much to do with dirty bars or cover bands, anyway, so why not focus on the positive: Frontman Kris Rodgers has a nice set of pipes (no wonder he was pegged as Chris Cornell for a recent Clash of the Titans); guitarist Tyler Johnson can rip a solo (I'm going with a mix of Eddie van Halen, Mike McCready, and Slash); and Brandon Reynolds (rhythm guitar), Corey Pacillo (bass), and Mike Bean (drums) can drive a big radio song just as easily as they coax along a soft ballad. Bean opens the album, actually, with a crisp drum lead on "So Fine" that's joined after a couple bars by a riff that might remind you of R.E.M.'s "Orange Crush" and a set of handclaps that underscore radio-rock vocals that are mixed right up in front and impossible to miss. Rodgers is in that Geddy Lee/Cornell/Brad Delp class of high-register vocalists who tread the edge of screaming but have enough body to keep it from sounding too shrill. The tune's a classic rock take on the unattainable girl ("she's got the devil in her eyes"), and Rodgers toes the party line. His: "She drinks wine like water/It's one of the tricks her momma taught her." Ben Harper's: "Funny things she learns from her momma/Like the way she throws her head back when she's swallowing pills." And a line from "She's Country": "A hell-raisin' sugar when the sun goes down/Mama taught her how to rip up a town." Later, on "Hold it Down," a more downtempo tune with clipped vocals in the chorus, they seem to acknowledge their rock roots and get a bit post-structural: "Only the strong survive/What can you do/It's all in the heat of the night/Between me and you." That's a progression from Elvis to Ray Charles to REO Speedwagon to Pat Benatar to Bryan Adams, right there. (Actually, to show you how clichû Adams has always been, he has two different songs boasting both "only the strong survive" and "in the heat of the night.") But who cares? This isn't an album where you're supposed to deconstruct the lyrics anyway. "Why Cry Again" boasts tribal and primal double bass to make Twisted Roots proud. "No Time to Save" sees a Pacillo bass strut in the chorus that oozes swagger. "Dangerous to the Enemy" is like the Black Crows covering Rush, a southern prog with full-throttle Johnson guitar. You know, rock out with your cock out. That kind of thing. They start out stripped-down, build to a big-time chorus, deliver on an instrumental break, then bring it back home with a crisp finish. It's huge in the headphones, gets your blood going, and it's a ton of fun. Of course, Highway Jackson aren't without self-inspection. "For the Day" finds Rodgers accompanied only by guitar, pondering that age-old question, "whether I'm the fly or the swatter" (Mark Knopfler phrased it: "sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug"). Hey, with that vocal tone, that clean picking, there's no reason to be feeling the "weight of the world;" just roll with it. "No Time to Save" sees a Pacillo bass strut in the chorus that oozes swagger. "Dangerous to the Enemy" is like the Black Crows covering Rush, a southern prog with full-throttle Johnson guitar. You know, rock out with your cock out. That kind of thing. They start out stripped-down, build to a big-time chorus, deliver on an instrumental break, then bring it back home with a crisp finish. It's huge in the headphones, gets your blood going, and it's a ton of fun. Of course, Highway Jackson aren't without self-inspection. "For the Day" finds Rodgers accompanied only by guitar, pondering that age-old question, "whether I'm the fly or the swatter" (Mark Knopfler phrased it: "sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug"). Hey, with that vocal tone, that clean picking, there's no reason to be feeling the "weight of the world;" just roll with it.
