I was born in Calgary singing, dancing and complaining and yes I am half white . I was playing piano at age 5 in the royal conservatory of music and singing and dancing in a show choir at age 8, as well as training properly in voice. I left those artist...
I was born in Calgary singing, dancing and complaining and yes I am half white . I was playing piano at age 5 in the royal conservatory of music and singing and dancing in a show choir at age 8, as well as training properly in voice. I left those artist pursuits, embarrassed my them in highschool. At 17 some bad stuff went down in my life so I became reclusive and played piano all day long. At this point I started songwriting, usually variation off of Chopin or Mozart songs. I moved to Montreal at 21 and studied piano with a man named Yaron Ross and composition with Dr Rosemary Mountain at Concordia University. Montreal was also time spent experimenting with broken social scenes like; Indy rock bands, ex con band mates, saxophonists who tried to have a threesome with me and a small but aggressive following of intense lesbians (yes, all this...really did happen). I have arranged for horn instruments, and love arranging for cello and violin and mixing classical into an indie pop mix. I have chronicled my stories and the characters of the Indy Rockness scene in Montreal to the Bluegrass communities of Calgary in all my albums; the happy stories and the tragic ones. I hope the songs have some meaning to you because they were sure intense things to go through at the time.
So please vote for me, I'm great... I'm SO great. I'm kidding. But please do it anyways. I love collaborating with dancers and animators and maybe if I'm not sober I'll agree to perform with an artist. I like to mix old classical ideas with new ones and I like projects with other artists who link along the same line.

I started taking piano seriously at age 17. Following an assault, I turned to music and performance. I guess I'm bringing the honesty of what I've been through. April 2010.] Sounds like healing... Why these too places? I love Calgary and Montreal. They both have such different artistic offerings, and both are very political. Calgary is artistic but with no place to go. Everybody's hiding something there... and it has space. It's haunting--and a great space for artistic creation... Montreal is like a one-night-stand, whereas Calgary is like an engagement ring. [laughing] ...I love Montreal because it has a very supportive artistic and musical community. [Jamiee Lee-Baggley. Flowing between each city there is a struggle to figure out who you are... both cities and being between them inspires open-ended interpretations... How do you go about writing your songs? They wake me up at three in the morning. I ask myself, "Is that my song?" [laughing]. When I determine it's mine, I give it all I can... Your formal classical training really shines through. I love how you mix your classical influences with modern lyrics and themes... with a good dose of musical humour, too. I love that my background has given me the skill to play exactly what I want on the piano. I really revel in the sensation of playing and singing. It allows me to explore my perspectives and agenda toward music. As a performing artist, I think a lot about--and explore a lot--the differences between art and entertainment... They’re in the streets, in movies and in literature. Boys are holding hands with other boys on cable TV while lady-lovin’ ladies smooch their partners in front of the dépanneur. But there’s still one place a lot of LGBT people hold back: in their own music. Queer musicians are still waiting for their moment of truth, says singer and gay activist Ezra Axelrod, and the only thing stopping them is themselves. “Gays have this mentality that there will be some kind of negative consequence if they are 100-per-cent honest,” said Axelrod. “I say, get over it and grow some fucking balls!” This week the London, England-based American musician joins Calgary singer Jaimee Lee on Montreal stages for Pianissimo Activismo!, a three-day concert and discussion series. Both classically-trained musicians will tackle the issue of homosexuality, feminism and activism in music. Lee, a Concordia grad who identifies as bisexual, said queer musicians aren’t doing themselves any favours when they try to pass themselves off as straight. “That feeling of being liberated while you’re doing a performance—sometimes that comes hand-in-hand with being open about your own sexuality,” she pointed out. “It seems like it’s such a hindrance to creative performances where you have to do this whole PR campaign [when] you have to change your lyrics around and be less open about who you really are.” While Lee aims to leave her own lyrics open to interpretation, Axelrod sings unapologetically—and specifically—about the ins and outs of loving other men. “For too long, gay artists have avoided referencing their sexuality out of fear for their ‘careers,’” he asserted. “I completely reject those concerns. If I’ve lived something, you can bet you’ll hear about it in one of my songs.” Axelrod’s openness has motivated some listeners to search for a political agenda in his music, something he had never intended. The imposed obligation to represent the queer community is uncomfortable for Lee, who said she doesn’t think of herself as “100-per-cent gay.” Her political focus is more on feminism than gay rights. She said she would prefer if her songs about same-sex romance didn’t become politicized. “However,” she added, “I’m never going to turn my back on a group of people that have never turned their back on me.” Lee said she doesn’t want to force anyone out of the closet, but Axelrod argues that if you want to sing about your sex life at all, you’ve got be clear about what you mean. “The big question is, ‘Why should someone have to reveal details of their private life?’” he explained. “They don’t. But if sexuality were so personal, why do Ricky Martin and so many other gay recording artists sing hot and heavy songs about women and film erotic music videos with them? Is that not an expression of sexuality?” “I wouldn’t care about all of this if it weren’t for the serious damage [...] it does to the cultural perception of homosexuality, he concluded. “You can be gay as long as no one has to see it or hear about it.” Pianissimo Activismo! starts with a discussion on April 6 at 8 p.m. at Café Zigoto (5731 Parc Ave.) about music, queerness, activism, feminism and doin’ it for yourself. Jaimee Lee (4/06/2010 – 4/08/2010) by Dee on April 15th, 2010 Calgary’s Jaimee Lee was recently in Montreal for not one performance, but three consecutive nights of piano heaven, as she debuted her Multiple Personalities tour and certainly delivered the goods. Though proud of her hyphenated surname (Lee-Baggley), the singer prefers to drop the Baggley for conciseness and familiarity. She also feels this helps keep the public Jaimee somewhat separate from the private Jaimee. Capitalizing on her own multiplicity, Lee performed each show in a different costume. The first night, she appeared as Abigail The Ambitious, next as Lily The Third World Citizen, and lastly as Sid The Entertainer/Alcoholic. She offered a smattering of songs that contrasted (questionably) nice girls with outright sluts. Her delivery ranged from near-whispers to soulful cries, creating an aura of vulnerability laced with overt sexuality. Lee interchangeably plays the role of good and bad girl, as witnessed in the intro of ‘Vultures In Human Clothing’ which exposes a frail voice complete with natural cracks and imperfections. As the song progresses, Lee effortlessly swings from little lamb to powerhouse, accusing the masses of narcissism, hypocrisy, and generally unsavory behavior. Her truths are scathing and honest. The casual listener may find her overly bitchy, but those with shared experiences feel her pain and recognize the characters in the portraits she paints. During Lee’s Montreal jaunt, new audiences were surprised at how easily they were moved. Genuine emotions allowed the skeptic and the uninitiated to let their floodgates be flung wide open. The performances could be likened to a cute little girl cutting open an adult’s chest to watch heart and guts bloodily hit the floor. Though it’s doubtful that Lee takes sadistic pleasure in torturing her audience, what she does do is sing her own guts out. The whimsical songwriter once took cues from Tori Amos to concoct her own musical world. She proves she could definitely take the place of the now jaded and middle-aged Amos. If not to replace Amos, to at least progress from where the girl-woman left off a decade ago. Like Amos, Lee has a quirky sense of humor. Wit and sarcasm are evident in tunes like ‘Vegans And Green Tea’, where vegans go hunting, and so-called trendy girls trip over yoga mats. This critique on hipsterdom’s cast of characters bears an uncanny resemblance to real people we may have encountered hanging out in the hip Mile End and Plateau areas of Montreal. In these hoods, nerdy glasses are now fashionable, and thrift store clothing demonstrates how cool rather than how poor we are. Lee herself is known to wear gigantic-framed spectacles, but during her shows, usually ended up removing them, admitting their pretentiousness. At the second show, Lee performed a tongue-in-cheek cover of Rod Stewart’s ‘Do Ya Think I’m Sexy’. The blasé narrator describes a loser’s series of attempts to get laid. Never has Rod Stewart been so easily emasculated! Coy glances at the crowd and sarcastic remarks thrown to the barflies kept the show light and fun, when the ambiance might have otherwise turned dark and depressing. At a bar like Cabaret Mado (where the second show took place), drag queens and cheeky decor abound. So of course, downer lyrics may not go over well with the regulars. Lee avoided certain doom by joking that the boys drinking at the bar might be able to see up her skirt, but deliberately left her legs parted on her piano stool. The songstress obviously likes to tease, as also evidenced by her costume on the final evening of her Montreal tour. Sporting a shorter-than-short miniskirt, she feigned awkwardness passing through the mostly gay-male crowd. She then announced matter-of-factly, that considering the majority of the room’s sexual preference, probably nobody cared what was under her skirt. Complementing her schoolgirl-esque attire, Lee wore a t-shirt that read “Fed Up” (think Fed Ex logo), with the fine print “With Men”. With regards to sexuality, Lee doesn’t consider herself gay, but claims she’s simply “bad at being heterosexual”. She sometimes explores this theme in her songs. ‘Naked Nightmare’ tells the story of a girl-on-boy-on-girl experience and is punctuated by heavy breathing by a lusty Lee. The songbird gives plenty of opportunities for her listener to connect with her on a very intimate level, beyond the orgasmic breathing. The overall reaction to the trio of Montreal shows was one of awe. The “threesome” began with a performance interspersed with a discussion entitled Sexuality, Songwriting and Selling Out. The Q&A engaged the audience and when the show ended, the conversations continued one-on-one. It seemed the new fans each had something to share with Lee. She achieved something many artists strive for — touching listeners on a very deep level. Through music and emotion, attendees not only bonded with the singer but also with each other. The chanteuse and her various personae left quite an impression on a town over-saturated with hipsters and wannabes. If you have an opportunity to see Jaimee Lee perform, do not miss out! With regards to sexuality, Lee doesn’t consider herself gay, but claims she’s simply “bad at being heterosexual”. She sometimes explores this theme in her songs. ‘Naked Nightmare’ tells the story of a girl-on-boy-on-girl experience and is punctuated by heavy breathing by a lusty Lee. The songbird gives plenty of opportunities for her listener to connect with her on a very intimate level, beyond the orgasmic breathing. The overall reaction to the trio of Montreal shows was one of awe. The “threesome” began with a performance interspersed with a discussion entitled Sexuality, Songwriting and Selling Out. The Q&A engaged the audience and when the show ended, the conversations continued one-on-one. It seemed the new fans each had something to share with Lee. She achieved something many artists strive for — touching listeners on a very deep level. Through music and emotion, attendees not only bonded with the singer but also with each other.
