Painter/musician J. Norman Stewart (aka: John N. Stewart) spent 60 years in the Los Angeles area and played at Tony Danza's "My Place" restaurant, The Alley Cat Bistro, Alphonses (in Toluca Lake), and several venues in Newport Beach. His style is light, sometimes whimsical, and he prefers old standards, gospel, show tunes, Brazillian jazz, film scores and some old jazz standards. J. Norman Stewart’s mother was his only piano teacher. At age 7, he learned to read music and performed some classical pieces. She also taught him to play by ear, and that became his musical mode of choice. You are also an amazing visual artist. Do you prefer music or visual art? I can actually get lost in either one of them. The music making process is very enjoyable, especially with the new digital tools that are available. In art, I tend to get carried away by the particular piece that I'm working on, almost like it's pulling me into new possibilities. Sometimes I am very surprised by the results. Do music and art fulfill different things for you? They are both intimate processes and I am equally fulfilled doing either one. Art is easier for me, and a more intellectual process. Music is more like instant gratification, but often surprises me when I listen to the CDs later, since so much my music is improvisation. I started producing my own CDs three years ago. I thought I'd better do it before I hit 70. What do you think of the music scene in the north state? I love it. If you search it out, you can find everything up here. Since we've been here, I've seen and heard every type of music imaginable: classical, jazz, rock, opera, folk, reggae, Jamaican. I've even seen a Broadway musical at the Redding Convention Center. Any favorite local bands/musicians? Kyle Wiley Pickett, the North State Symphony conductor, is an excellent flautist. Jim French in Weaverville is an amazing musician. I also enjoy listening to Charles Valona, Allison and Victor and Aaron Kelly. He composes classical music every waking moment and never comes up for air. Where have you played? What are some of your favorite local venues? In the ‘60s, I played at lots of bar and restaurant venues in Southern California: Glendale, Newport Beach, Toluca Lake, Encino and Thousand Oaks. My highlights were playing with Gene Krupa and the Elliot Brothers. I did sideline playing for several films, including "The Way We Were," “Mannix” and a Larry Hagman film, "A Double Life." I met Henry Fonda while playing for "Roots II". Locally, my first gig was at Catanio's Restaurant in Redding. I've played lots of private parties, book signings, art openings, weddings and even a couple of Red Hat Society fashion shows, and I play every other week at The Oak River Rehabilitation Hospital to the best audience in the world. I also have a regular gig at the Lake California Community Church most Sundays. What can the audience expect from your performance at the December ArtHop? I usually try to play an eclectic mix of show tunes, film music, jazz, classical improvisations and a few of my own works.
