The band got its inspiration from a youth group, of the same name and formed in the 80’s by Tim Rollins, which took underprivileged kids off the streets and turned them on to art. Today, many of these artists have their works hanging in museums around the world. Kids of Survival’s vision, much like Tim’s, was to share their own art – music – with the world, too. So, driven by friendship and the need to collaborate, the band, founded by drummer Dylan Lipari and bassist and lead singer Gary Gordon, was born in 2005. Interview with Kids Of Survival: ‘Til Your Heart Pops —by Duckie Blakney, February 5, 2009 Kids Of Survival from NYC are just one of those bands that you can’t help but like because of their wide eyed and bubbly approach to pop music-making and their knee-slapping banter and shtick. They have admittedly avoided the “if you scream it, they will come” mentality of most bands who throw in a breakdown and pig squeals just to sell a few records; KOS are staying true to their pop and punk roots and the teeny boppers of the tri-state area are loving it! I had no idea what I was getting into when I got in touch with singer Vin Survival for a phone interview that quickly turned into a conference call with Gary, then Dylan and Frank (the rest of the band). I’m surprised a single question was answered between the hysterical laughing and wise cracks. Between questioning each other on who taped the latest episode of Entourage and Flight Of The Concords to trying to figure out how to make a three-way phone call on a Blackberry, Kids Of Survival know how to take anything (their music included) and make it fun. This energetic and talented band of comics is definitely for fans of All-American Rejects, The Starting Line and Fall Out Boy but with a very homey comfort that you can only find in a local band. With their sophomore full-length album due out the spring of 2009, we’ll see if they can still break as many hearts and tap as many toes as their debut album, Good Til Your Heart Pops. Whether you’re just going to download KOS tunes, play back songs on their MySpace or be a dedicated fan (and they have armies of them) who makes it out night after night to shows, Kids Of Survival definitely deserves a bit of attention. Vin: I am delirious on cold medicine right now, Duckie, I should have warned you. This is gonna be great. [Laughs] I love you guys; you’re too funny. Dylan: The feeling is mutual. I actually figured out recently that I’ve been saying it wrong. I’ve been saying ‘the feeling is neutral,’ like, not the right word. [Laughs] Vin: Gary, all of this is being recorded right now and Dylan just admitted how terrible he is with grammar. Duckie, I swear to god, print that! Well, my first question is who did you guys grow up listing to? Who are your influences? Vin: Can we answer this as individuals or a band as a whole? Individually, please. Gary, you go first. Gary: Who me? [Laughs] Did everyone else go? [Laughs] If I was speaking for everybody grew up listening to different stuff because we’re ages apart; one of us is 15 and someone’s 12. Vin: I don’t think that you were listening because she said answer individually. After another few minutes of banter, Gary cited artist like the Ataris, Minus The Bear, Portugal. The Man, The Mars Volta and other “ambient” music as some of his favorites; Dylan, Blink 182, RX Bandits and other pop/punk bands. Frank likes an odd combination of Bone Thugs And Harmony, Boys2Men, A Day To Remember and Hanson while Vin likes “’90s love rock” (also know as ‘90s alternative like Bush and Oasis). So tell me about your first full length, Good Til Your Heart Pops. Gary: That record was recorded over two years ago now and we’ve been promoting it for a very long time. It’s an album filled with hooks, basically just a list of love songs. I think what’s great about it is that its easily excepted by everyone. We’re definitely really proud of that record. You guys are working on your second full-length album, tell me about that. Dylan: This record is definitely a step up. [Someone starts talking in the background] Dude, you totally ruined my answer. If you’re going to talk, hit mute! [Laughs] It’s a step up musicianship-wise. The first record was recorded about two and a half years ago and we were promoting this record for so long and now that we’re no long affiliated with the label, we stopped touring. But now we’re finally releasing new music. We feel like its going to show people that we can play songs that are more mature than our songs that are currently out. But we can still keep that catchiness and our overall general style. On this new album we can show people that we’ve progressed on our instruments. There’s been a good response. Gary: The writing process usually starts through me and I’ve always loved bands that we listen to in our van like the Starting Line, but as a growing musician, we all really wanted to make an album that stood out in its own way. We did the best we could to keep the idea of the first record, the catchiness and trying to express a new emotion in rock and roll. We hope the music and lyrics come together that create a new tangible emotion that defines our band. Vin: Just to sum it up: The new album is more technical, like asking a girl to the prom, but its catchy like an STD on prom night. [Laughs] Wow. Gary, he just shit on your answer. Vin: I never had that experience, but I’m just saying. Do you guys embrace the label of pop-rock? Gary: We have nothing against bands that scream. There are some great bands out there that have screaming. There are some bands that make it their own and there are some bands out there, unfortunately, that end up being just another screamo band that no one will probably ever want to listen to. However, when we say ‘pop’ we don’t mean it in the sense of Ryan Cabrera, we mean it to be a popular sound. I guess the way we wrote our first record, it could be considered pop but I can see us becoming more of an alternative rock band. We like the pop-rock label and have always liked the music we play; we never thought it to be a negative trait for us. Vin: I won’t shit on anything. [Laughs] Now that your sound changed a little bit, do you think your fan base will change at all? Gary: I hope so. We don’t want to make the same record over and over again and get buried piles of crap that is on the scene. [Dylan began to answer the preceding question but there was a knock at Gary’s door; it was Vin who drove to Gary’s house while doing the interview.] Vin: Gary is wearing this plaid, button down shirt— completely unbuttoned—there’s hair everywhere. [Laughs] If you want, I will take a picture of this and send it to your phone. [Laughs] I’d love that. But back to being serious, if you guys could pack up and go on tour with any band, who would it be? Vin: I think if Jimmy Eat World would make another record, that would be pretty cool. If Acceptance got back together, that would be a fun tour. Gary who do you wanna go on tour with? Gary: I just wish Led Zeppelin would get back together and we’d go on the road with them. The Mars Volta, but personally I’d like to go on tour with all our friends that are on our level because there are no egos. Frank: Hanson. [Laughs] Dylan: I’d like to go on tour with our friends’ bands too because they can have a good time because if we’re on tour in the middle of the week during the school year we can still have fun with our friends’ bands even if only 10 kids show up. But I think it would be cool if the RX Bandits would headline and have our friends in The Status and to top it all off, throw in Blink 182. For people who aren’t fans of your band, what is one thing you’d want them to know? Dylan: I would want people to know that we are an extraordinarily hard working band. We do everything ourselves. We spent countless hours meeting people and writing. We work really hard to do what we do. Vin: I just want them to know that we like having fun at shows as much as they like having fun at shows. Meet Queens Band Kids of Survival... by
Queens quartet Kids of Survival are not strangers to playing the Meadowlands. Last year, the band performed in the parking lot, part of the 2009 Bamboozle Festival. And this weekend, they finally made it inside the complex itself, this time in the unlikely role as the opening act for Bon Jovi. We caught up with the band--Gary Gordon Wallach, bass and lead vocals; Frank Incandela and Mike Avnyin, guitars; Dylan Lipari, drums--on Sunday, in Williamsburg's McCarren Park, to get the story on how they went from the undercard on a tween punk festival to opening for one of the biggest bands on the planet. May 2009: you're playing the Meadowlands parking lot for Bamboozle. May 2010: you're playing the new arena, opening for Bon Jovi. How did that happen? Dylan Lipari: Whenever Bon Jovi does his summer tour, he picks different emerging artists to open up each date--via something called OurStage.com, run by MTV--because they were given the same break through a similar opportunity. My mom said we should enter and we never enter contests because you just never win. We kept making bulletins [on Myspace] to vote for us but eventually we all forgot about it, but we made it to the second round. Then we forgot about it again. A month ago, I was laying on the couch, hanging out with my cat, and I had just gotten off the phone with Frank after being on the phone with Gary and before that Mike. I was over being on the phone. I didn't know the number, but I thought I should probably pick it up. I answered and the other line said, "Hey, is this Dylan from Kids of Survival? I just want to congratulate you, you're opening up for Bon Jovi." I said, "Get the fuck out of here," and I heard a bunch of laughing and she said, "Dylan, you're on speakerphone. You don't usually play for a Bon Jovi crowd. How would you describe your regular audience? DL: A lot of like 13, 14 year old girls but as the scene has changed, [fans are more into] more hardcore Day to Remember-type stuff--happy hardcore. That's the Warped Tour scene, and we don't fit in. We kind of appeal more to people our age, but we found out everyone above 24-years-old likes it too--from all the Bon Jovi fans who loved us this weekend. Frank Incandela: The security guards loved us, too. We have our own separate demographic for security guards. We have consistently, every time, won over every security guard. When we play Highline Ballroom, there are five security guards who request to work on our shows. Are there benefits to winning over security guards beside easy load-ins? FI: Last night at the Meadowlands, we loaded in our equipment, and parked our van across the street. We weren't even supposed to be there, but the guy was like, "Alright, you can park there." At the end of the day, I brought the van back around and the guards got a dog to sniff for bombs just like they did earlier when we arrived and, apparently, this time the dog smelled a bomb in our van. The guards were freaking out. They closed all the gates down. They had me pop my hood, they were in my engine, in the trailer, searched through every little piece of whatever was in the trailer. It took about a half an hour for them to realize it was OK. I almost got arrested. They literally thought I was a terrorist. DL: The best part was that the bomb sniffing dog didn't smell anything the first time, so we must have gone home between 12:30 and after we played to get our bombs and come back. What do you think it could have been? DL: They asked me if we had any fireworks in the van and I was like, "Hell yeah, dude." We just got back from tour and we were in the south a lot. Of course we had fireworks. You know, we're from New York, born and raised, so when we're in the south, we get like little kids. We see fireworks, we're super excited. And after we tell him this, the security guard breaks complete tough guy character with his semi-automatic weapon and goes, "Me, too," and walks away. FI: The thing about them pointing the finger at me about having a bomb was that I just played the Meadowlands, so nothing could have scared me. A bunch of cops with a bunch of AK-47s were looking at me and I was like, who cares? I just opened up Meadowlands.

May 2009: you're playing the Meadowlands parking lot for Bamboozle. May 2010: you're playing the new arena, opening for Bon Jovi. How did that happen? Dylan Lipari: Whenever Bon Jovi does his summer tour, he picks different emerging artists to open up each date--via something called OurStage.com, run by MTV--because they were given the same break through a similar opportunity. My mom said we should enter and we never enter contests because you just never win. We kept making bulletins [on Myspace] to vote for us but eventually we all forgot about it, but we made it to the second round. Then we forgot about it again. A month ago, I was laying on the couch, hanging out with my cat, and I had just gotten off the phone with Frank after being on the phone with Gary and before that Mike. I was over being on the phone. I didn't know the number, but I thought I should probably pick it up. I answered and the other line said, "Hey, is this Dylan from Kids of Survival? I just want to congratulate you, you're opening up for Bon Jovi." I said, "Get the fuck out of here," and I heard a bunch of laughing and she said, "Dylan, you're on speakerphone. You don't usually play for a Bon Jovi crowd. How would you describe your regular audience? DL: A lot of like 13, 14 year old girls but as the scene has changed, [fans are more into] more hardcore Day to Remember-type stuff--happy hardcore. That's the Warped Tour scene, and we don't fit in. We kind of appeal more to people our age, but we found out everyone above 24-years-old likes it too--from all the Bon Jovi fans who loved us this weekend. Frank Incandela: The security guards loved us, too. We have our own separate demographic for security guards. We have consistently, every time, won over every security guard. When we play Highline Ballroom, there are five security guards who request to work on our shows. Are there benefits to winning over security guards beside easy load-ins? FI: Last night at the Meadowlands, we loaded in our equipment, and parked our van across the street. We weren't even supposed to be there, but the guy was like, "Alright, you can park there." At the end of the day, I brought the van back around and the guards got a dog to sniff for bombs just like they did earlier when we arrived and, apparently, this time the dog smelled a bomb in our van. The guards were freaking out. They closed all the gates down. They had me pop my hood, they were in my engine, in the trailer, searched through every little piece of whatever was in the trailer. It took about a half an hour for them to realize it was OK. I almost got arrested. They literally thought I was a terrorist. DL: The best part was that the bomb sniffing dog didn't smell anything the first time, so we must have gone home between 12:30 and after we played to get our bombs and come back. What do you think it could have been? DL: They asked me if we had any fireworks in the van and I was like, "Hell yeah, dude." We just got back from tour and we were in the south a lot. Of course we had fireworks. You know, we're from New York, born and raised, so when we're in the south, we get like little kids. We see fireworks, we're super excited. And after we tell him this, the security guard breaks complete tough guy character with his semi-automatic weapon and goes, "Me, too," and walks away. FI: The thing about them pointing the finger at me about having a bomb was that I just played the Meadowlands, so nothing could have scared me. A bunch of cops with a bunch of AK-47s were looking at me and I was like, who cares? I just opened up Meadowlands.
