Biography

The term singersongwriter is run into the ground. I suppose it makes you think of a soppy troubadour with a broken heart or just reminds you of every open mic you've had to sit through. Well I guess as general a term as it is, Kiernan McMullan is a singersongwriter. However when you listen to his debut record "Perfect People Are Boring" (111 records) it is not long before you realise there are songs on this record that reach out towards electro and spoken word as well as funk, rock, pop, jazz...

The term singersongwriter is run into the ground. I suppose it makes you think of a soppy troubadour with a broken heart or just reminds you of every open mic you've had to sit through. Well I guess as general a term as it is, Kiernan McMullan is a singersongwriter. However when you listen to his debut record "Perfect People Are Boring" (111 records) it is not long before you realise there are songs on this record that reach out towards electro and spoken word as well as funk, rock, pop, jazz and roots music. It would also seem that this is only the start of what to expect. The album was recorded at Grouse Lodge studios in Ireland (REM, SNOW PATROL, MICHAEL JACKSON) . The 22 year old started touring in the US to support his premier release in November of 2008 spending the first two months without a van to tour in. So he took to the road with only a guitar and a backpack and hitchiked playing shows almost every day up and down the east coast. Fast forward to now and he is in a van with nearly 50 thousand miles and hundreds of shows under his belt in the US. He has toured and played with everyone from LFO and Rookie of the Year to Lenka, Forverinmotion, Jet Lag Gemini and NEVERSHOUTNEVER just to name a handful. He may be a newcomer to the American scene but having grown up in Boston and moving to Ireland at 15 he started touring in Ireland around the age of 18. He gained some minor success with his first single there "Borderline" which got him shows with everyone from Cathy Davey and The Coronas as well as slots at the D 10 festival with the Zutons and Sharon Shannon and help building a loyal following there. This also helped him land 2 SXSW shows this last year where he finished to a standing ovation. So as far as the future is concerned, it looks like a lot of the same. Having just returned from Los Angeles where he finished work on an acoustic EP to be released shortly after the new year in 2010, he is rambling around the country again playing a small amount of dates. Look for Kiernan to be on tour for a huge chunk of next year and look for his new acoustic EP!
