Long Story Short Gig Review by
It was a big audience for this heat of the rock contest and after a long hot day, the crowd was going crazy, the bands were going crazy and things were getting sweaty onstage and off. We were in for a treat. Long Story Short played an absolute blinder. The three-piece have a powerhouse drummer with bags of volume and great technique, and with the temperature rising he would have been excused if he hadn’t managed to keep his shirt on this time! The big drum sound, coupled with some great guitar and bass interplay and spot-on harmony vocals creates the effect of a fourth band member and I still find it hard to believe there’s only the three of them churning out these fun and compelling pop-punk anthems. They had the audience mesmerized once more, and what makes the package complete is the fact that they seem to pay attention to every detail of their performance and that includes their fans as well. This congruence with the crowd coupled with a cool confidence that they have in their own ability to entertain just makes you nod and smile. Nice one, lads.

We’ve had a fair few bands this year that seem to be right on the nail when it comes to dishing out slick Pop Punk and I must admit I thought we’d seen the ultimate performance in this genre a few weeks back. Well, along came Long Story Short with an anything-you-can-do-we-can-do-better attitude and the Billericay massive jumping up and down in support at the front of the stage. These guys had it all, really. Great harmony vocals, tight guitar and bass work and a very good drummer with bags of energy and fills to match. He also followed the current trend amongst the drumming fraternity to go topless at the slightest provocation – good drum-skills here so we’ll let him off, even if the phrase ‘who ate all the pies?’ sprung to mind on this occasion! Considering this band was a three piece they really packed out the sound and had as much if not more punch than a lot of the larger bands doing this kind of stuff. The guitarist and bassist shared lead vocal duties and still found time for plenty of movement on stage which makes all the difference. There was an irresistible sense of fun here, three lads confident in what they were doing and really enjoying themselves doing it. They even managed to get four girls down the front screaming out the chorus of one of their songs, and a cult following like this will doubtless give them an edge over the competition in what is a competitive genre.
