Mark Kano is the former front man for the alternative rock band Athenaeum, who released two stellar albums on Atlantic Records in 1998 and 2001 respectively. Athenaeum's album "Radiance" was hailed by the late Billboard Magazine editor Timothy White as one of 1998's best albums, and produced the top ten modern rock hit "What I Didn't Know", written by Kano. These days the Asian American singer-songwriter is pursuing a solo career and enjoying life as a husband and father in his hometown of Greensboro, NC. In February of 2009, Kano independently released his self-produced solo debut "Walking On Broadway" to rave reviews and is currently playing shows in the southeast.

Thursday, March 5, 2009 Review: Mark Kano "Walking on Broadway" [EP] Mark Kano is the powerful voice behind the 90s alternative rock band called Athenaeum - remember their 1998 hit "What I Didn't Know" off "Radiance"? See our reviews of Athenaeum here. Fans like me who have missed this band and lead singer Mark Kano's distinctive vocals have reason to celebrate with the release of his first solo CD, "Walking on Broadway". The 8 tracks on this release will take you back to the late 90s when post-grunge bands like Toad the Wet Sprocket, Gin Blossoms, and Better Than Ezra were dominating the charts. As Kano's deep and rich voice pretty much defined the sound of Athenaeum, it is no surprise that "Walking on Broadway" sounds very much like his old band. For me, it is a familiar sound that triggers nostalgia for the past. But for those who do not have memories of Athenaeum, Mark Kano is still going to impress you with his brand of melodic rock. Add to the mix the skilled hand of Gavin MacKillop (Toad The Wet Sprocket, Goo Goo Dolls, Athenaeum) and you have an unbeatable collection of sonically brilliant pop rock tunes. There is a 50/50 mix of ballads and mid-tempo rockers; lyrically, Kano keeps things simple and sincere. The title track is an obvious standout, with Mark Kano's love for Big Wreck shining through. My other favorites include the slow burner, "I'm Still Waiting", and the swirling and soaring, "Where Were You Last Night", which may be one of Kano's most creative vocal performances to date. The album has a very strong Athenaeum feel to it, which clearly was Kano’s intent, as he brought in Gavin Mackillop to mix the album who previously worked with Kano on Athenaeum’s debut album “Radiance.“ Many songs on the album, especially the title track, feel so much like Athenaeum that it almost feels like you are going back in time. In a time when so much of what is out there sounds exactly the same, a return of the Kano-Athenaeum sound is definitely not a bad thing. Songs like “Calling Saturn” and “Telling You I Love You” showcase just how sharp Kano’s skills as a lyricist still are, and tracks like “Sad Songs” showcase the southern rock flare that Athenaeum always had. Lyrically this album could be considered a bit more personal for Kano than his work with Athenaeum, especially on the closing ballad “Baby, I’m Your Man.” Overall, Kano may not have crafted an album this sound distinctly different than his previous work, but that doesn’t in any way make this album disappointing, instead it’s a lasting reminder of the unique songwriting style and melodic sound that only Kano can create.

Not much has changed with Mark's sound, in fact if I didn't know any better, I would have sworn this was a new Athenaeum album. Some will say that an artist not growing or changing over the years is a bad thing, but I do not, why change something that was nearly perfect in the first place? So far "Walking on Broadway" is the best album of 2009, it may be a little early to tell since it's only February, but this will be a hard album to beat over the coming months.

He’ll sit there, with his two sons, Noah and Emery, picking through new tunes, asking them what they think. But sometimes, he’ll pull out something called “The Piggyback Ride” and his boys sing along. How times have changed. I’ll always remember the Mark Kano of Athenaeum, the Korean American from Greensboro who made America swoon. Young women used to gather beneath his microphone in a big cluster. They’d look up all doe-eyed and expectant, wanting to be … oh … so … close as he sang about love and longing in a baritone as smooth as top-shelf whisky. It was downright goofy. For eight days 11 years ago, I followed Athenaeum through three states. I watched them perform, do radio and TV interviews, and meet thousands of screaming fans as their first single, “What I Didn’t Know,’’ rocketed up the charts. “What I Didn’t Know’’ reached No. 9; the group’s debut CD, “Radiance’’ — named for the short street in Greensboro where they once lived — sold 100,000; and music critics called Athenaeum the sound of the new millennium. Hype can do that. So can Atlantic Records, the group’s label. Athenaeum was the first local artist that Atlantic had signed since High Point’s own John Coltrane. I love that fact. But I also love the fact that Athenaeum went as far as it did. The band flirted with the big time. Yet, like so many bands, it became a casualty of the music industry’s falling profits. After two CDs, Atlantic cut Athenaeum. The band still plays occasionally. But the members have disappeared into the collective daily grind as guitar teacher, graphic designer, college student, studio owner and budding novelist. Kano has no regrets. Athenaeum brought him a legion of friends, a scrapbook full of memories, an introduction into his new profession, and a teenage fan who drove her mom’s Volvo station wagon so she could sneak into local bars to see him play. That fan, Kellie Bailess, eventually became his wife. So, Kano calls himself lucky. He was a Smith High grad, Class of ’92, living every kid’s dream. He got signed, played his own music, toured the country and heard crowds 10,000 strong sing every word he ever wrote. And mind you, this all happened before the explosion of “American Idol.’’ Today, Kano is 35, a married father of two who runs his landscaping business as he writes music, records and plays gigs whenever he can. Well, I can only talk for myself but this is the first time in a long time I hear new music from Athenaeum frontman Mark Kano. You might remember the former Atlantic records band and their 1998 hit "What didn't I know", the band sold over 100,000 copies of the album "Radiance" that I can recommend for anyone who hasn't heard it. Now what about the comeback album "Walking on Broadway" then, yes I recognize Kano's lovely voice right away and the style is still late 90's modern rock but with a singer/songwriter touch. His former band buddy Nic Brown from Athenaeum is playing the drums, you can actually call this a mini album feat. 8 songs with a running time of 30 minutes but the passion is there - yes I'm a sucker for this kind of modern rock that ruled the radio back in the late 90's. A safe buy, no doubt!

Sunday, March 15, 2009 Athenaeum front man Mark Kano has released his brand new album, Walking On Broadway, the first collection of new songs written by Kano since Athenaeum's 2001 self-titled effort on Atlantic Records. While the album has been a long time coming for Kano, it marks a rebirth for the talented singer songwriter, one that Kano says almost never happened. “I felt like I need to take a break for a while and clear my head because I had a lot of emotional baggage from just all the expectations that weren’t quite met from Athenaeum,” Kano told Alternative Addiction in a recent interview. “I don’t feel like I ever left music, I just sort of stayed dormant for a while.” Kano experimented with several side projects, as well as playing occasional dates with his Athenaeum band mates, but never felt like he was ready to write a solo record “I still wanted to write songs, and I never stopped doing that, I was just really hesitant to do [a solo album,]” explained Kano who also said he felt encouraged from his Athenaeum band mate and friend Mike Garrigan who had successfully released several solo EPs since his days with Athenaeum, but it wasn’t until he had completed writing a particular song that he felt like he might be ready to record a solo record. “I was just looking for a tune that really tied up my experiences as a musician over the past 6 or 7 years,” explained Kano about the track. “As soon as I wrote it, I played the song for Mike Garrigan and he agreed that it was one of the best songs I had written in a long time.” The song would turn out to be “Walking On Broadway,” the title track from Kano’s solo debut. “After I wrote that song I really felt like ‘Okay, I am ready to make a solo record now,’” Kano said. “I finally felt like I had some wind under my wings to go and do this.” First Listen: "Walking On Broadway" by Mark Kano With the breakthrough song under his belt, Kano penned another seven tracks for the album over the next year, devoting himself back to music. Kano said that he felt compelled to leave the album at 8 tracks, instead of the traditional 12 or 13, because it felt like a natural stopping point in his writing process. “It still feels like a complete record, a lot of times my favorite records are shorter records anyway,” said Kano. “There are always a few tracks on an album that you end up skipping so hopefully I trimmed out the fat for people on this.” With his solo debut now out, Kano feels like he’s re-launched himself back into music, even if the music scene might be quite different from when Athenaeum was climbing the charts years ago. “I feel like this is my first step back into music, [but] I know that there is a different musical climate now. I’m in my mid 30’s so it may be a strange time to restart to a certain degree.” Either way, Kano is just happy to be involved with music again. “Whether I end up on the radio again, or just playing a bunch of local shows, I’m just happy to be playing music again.”
