Michelle Lewis is a talented writer and performer. She has an affecting personality and a sincerely endearing way about her. But she is not sugary sweet to the core. There is a devilishly playful layer inside that makes her wicked fun to be around. She’s the good girl with that mischievous little twinkle in her eye. If you are lucky enough to get the chance to see her perform, Michelle will not disappoint. She will touch you deeply with her serene, vulnerable music while making you laugh delightfully in between songs. Lewis masterfully draws you in, then lets you pull back. By the end of her show, you realize you’re not pulling back any more and you feel a real connection to the artist and her music. At the time of the interview, Michelle was about a month away from leaving on her national coast-to-coast tour. A two-month-long event that she had booked herself. “Part of the reason I’m doing the tour is because I’ve never driven straight through the country before, I always fly,” Michelle explained. “I think it’s a little bit of a rite of passage just for a human being, an American, to drive across the country. Everybody does it at some point and I haven’t done it yet —” “I have only made it to Texas,” I interrupted. “Well, you’d better get to it!” she directed, laughing. “I think it’s going to be great! I’m pretty much going out through the midwest and then taking the southern route back, then driving up the east coast to get back home. Berklee College of Music in Boston has produced a respectable amount of notable artists. [...] Eventually, we arrived at my current favorite, “Breakfast At Tiffany’s”, a track from her latest EP, BROKEN. "It was really late one night and I couldn’t sleep so I went downstairs,” Michelle related. “It was this big huge house and I had the biggest kind of loftiest bedroom — the real musician’s space in the house. Anyway, I went downstairs and I put on the tv and Breakfast At Tiffany’s was on. I had never seen it before and it was starting right from the beginning! So I’m watching it and the line comes up where Audrey Hepburn asks George Peppard about the ‘mean reds’ and says how they are so much worse than the blues and something just really connected for me. “People ask me if I sing the blues and I’m like, ‘No, I sing the reds.’” And she does. Michelle’s music takes you deep into the stuff we wrestle with in those late night hours, the fear, pain, insecurity, loss, loneliness and ultimately the love that unites us on an all too often unspoken level, that delicate thread that connects us to one another. And when Lewis sings about these moments, it’s an eloquent, moving and beautiful experience. [...]
