Frontman Goes From Leadoff Hitter to Lead Singer by
This summer, Peekskill native Matt Maher was cut form the Evansville Otter, a professional baseball team in Indiana. Maher has spent his whole life on the baseball diamond, starring for JFK in Somers before getting a scholarship to play for Fairleigh Dickinson University in NJ, even earning 1st Team Academic All-American honors from ESPN the Magazine. While it was the end of one dream for Maher, it was the beginning of another.
In addition to being a star athlete, Maher was an aspiring musician and the lead singer and pianist of Minutes Like Ours, a Peekskill-based pop band. When he went to Indiana, he had left his band mates behind. After he came back, satisfied he had given baseball all he had, he was ready to do whatever it took to make it as a rocker. The band has been catching on quickly, last month, their new single, "Lights Out" was the top pop song of October in MTV's "Ourstage," an online contest judged by visitors of the site.
"It was one of those things where we didn't really put a lot of eggs in the basket. It was more like, "Ah, let's try this out. It seems pretty cool, it's MTV after all," Maher recalls. "As the month progrressed, we went from 800th to 500th to 300th... All of a sudden, it said we were in the top 10 songs.
Formed in 2008, Minutes Like Ours features Tom and Devon Simmons, brothers who play bass and guitar, respectively. Somers native and JFK grad Pat O'Gara on drums and Walter Panas grad Damon Kost on guitar. Kost and the Simmons had been in various bands together before, even playing at the VANS Warped Tour and Bamboozle.
Maher's decision to give up baseball was not an easy one, as getting cut from one team is far from the end of the road for a ballplayer. He considered trying out for another pro team, and likely would have if music weren't waiting for him.
"Emotionally for all of us, it was a little odd," O'Gara recalls. "We were all so happy for him to have the opportunity, but we all wanted him to continue to play. Selfishly, we were all happy that he was back so quickly.
The MTV contest isn't the only indication he made the right choice. Minutes Like Ours is already on rotation at WRRV, a Poughkeepsie radio station, and will soon be heard on WHUD. While the band is still looking for a recording deal, they've got upcoming shows at the SouthSide Grill in Mahopac (Dec. 10) and The Chance in Poughkeepsie, where they will play in the Bamboozle Break Contest.

Alternative Press Issue 284 (March 2012)The Westchester, New York, quintet Minutes Like Ours began in 2009 as the duo of bassist/vocalist Tom Simmons and vocalist/pianist Matt Maher. Becaues of the latter’s background—he’s a former Division I All-American baseball player—the band take a disciplined approach to their buoyant piano-pop. “Musicians usually have this stigma of being lazy and carefree,” Maher says. “We work an inordinate amount to take our band to the next level. After practices, meetings, photo shoots and recording sessions, I spend hours online personally writing back to every comment, message or post [from fans].”
