In Kansas City, Missouri, on a hot summer night in July, Dylan “Sly” Synclaire was born. His wit and charm were evident from an early age, and his parents knew he was something special. At the age of 7 Dylan’s family picked up and headed for the Pacific Northwest, specifically Kent, WA. It was here that Sly would realize his talent for putting words together, and he spent the next 10 years sharpening his skills and free styling in ciphers. No friend or foe was safe from the young wordsmith. After high school, Synclaire departed from civilian life and enlisted in the Marine Corps. When he returned home after boot camp, his father gave the 18 year-old an ultimatum: Go to college and receive financial support, or pursue a career in music and receive love and wisdom. Dylan chose music (although he would argue that music chose him), and he began writing and performing locally. This time period proved to be a creative awakening, as Sly auditioned different arrangements and deliveries of his narratives, as well as incorporating vocal melodies and singing. After a performance at The Northwest Music Explosion, Synclaire spoke with local disc jockeys and producers who encouraged him to try his hand in Los Angeles. He took their advice and made the long drive down the Pacific Coast to L.A. Inside of his first year in Southern California, Synclaire signed an Artist Development Deal with Al Machera, owner of Westlake Recording Studios and Engineer/Producer for Salt-n-Peppa. This agreement allowed Dylan to make records under the guidance of an industry veteran and mold his raw potential into the polished artist he is today.
