Nate Wilson Group released their debut album
Unbound, on September 15th, 2008. The album represents a point of arrival for the Boston based quartet, whose songcraft and musicianship has already earned them a healthy buzz amongst fans and musical peers alike. Although a relative newcomer to the Northeast music scene, the Nate Wilson Group, which was formed little more than a year ago has already put together an impressive list of live performances, including support slots for Martin Sexton, Rose Hill Drive, Ryan Montbleau Band, and Deep Banana Blackout. In addition, the Group has appeared at some of the region's marquee venues and festivals, including both the Avalon and Paradise Rock Club in Boston, Bowery Ballroom in NYC, and at this year's Gathering of the Vibes in Bridgeport, CT. Musically speaking, the band has drawn comparisons to heavy “riff rock” luminaries such as Led Zeppelin, Cream, and Black Sabbath, as well as likeminded neo-classic and stoner rock contemporaries Wolfmother, The Black Keys, Dead Meadow, and The Raconteurs
Music fans in the Northeast are perhaps most familiar with the band's leader as the cofounder and virtuosic keyboardist of Percy Hill, a band who toured extensively on the national level garnering acclaim from fans and critics alike. Percy Hill's 1998 release
Color in Bloom, which heavily featured songs penned by Wilson, received a Jammy Award in 2000 for studio album of the year. Since 2001, Wilson has spent much of his time on the road and in the studio with Assembly of Dust, a band forged by former Strangefolk songwriter and frontman Reid Genauer. Since AOD's inception, the band, which is heavily fueled by songwriting collaboration between Wilson and Genauer, has been a mainstay of the national music scene and has appeared at festivals and venues including Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, Irving Plaza, and Carnegie Hall. In addition, Wilson's songwriting credits with AOD include two top 30 AAA radio hits, as well as two Jammy Award nominations for song of the year. Wilson, who recently earned his masters degree at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, has also garnered quite a reputation as a first-call freelance and session musician, and has appeared on the stage and in the studio with an impressive list of artists that span nearly every genre, including Martin Sexton, moe., Chuck Berry, John Scofield, Peter Bernstein, Stephen Perkins of Jane's Addiction, and members of Phish and the Allman Brothers Band to name a few
Wilson remains adamant that his new group is a band in the truest sense of the word, and not merely an assemblage of hired guns. And the players he surrounds himself with have the experience and accolades to back him up. Fellow Assembly of Dust and Percy Hill collaborator Adam Terrell first gained notoriety as the guitarist for Groovechild, a seacoast NH sensation that enjoyed radio success and major record label attention in the mid nineties. Since then, Terrell has appeared as a guest with a variety of acts including moe., Ryan Montbleau Band, and Melvin Sparks. Drummer Tom Arey, a graduate of Berklee College of Music, got his start with the band Uncle Sammy, and has since appeared with Sam Kininger, Lionel Loueke, and G. Love. Rounding out the quartet is bassist Tommy Lada; MIT graduate and chemical engineer by day, full-on rocker by night who can also be seen dropping bottoms with Garvy J. and Anomopoly
The nine songs that comprise
Unbound were first released as a free MP3 download to fans for a four-week period starting 9/15/08, during which time more than 1,100 copies were downloaded. The physical CD was released on 12/3/08 with a kickoff party in the band's hometown of Boston, and today the Nate Wilson Group continues to tour the Northeast in support of
Unbound, always searching for the next opportunity.
