Nobodys Hero's Perfected Aggression Opens for NOFX by
Nobodys Hero frontman and Against All Authority founding member, Joe Koontz is punk rock. If you spend any time driving between Coral Way and South Miami you'll see Koontz on his skateboard, wearing a sleeveless T-shirt and headphones affixed deeply into his ears. Whether he's tearing up Sub-Humans, Judge or Stiff Little Fingers; it's all the same to him. Koontz explains, "when I was 14, we called it all hardcore punk. You'd go to a show, it would be totally different bands -- like, Black Flag and the Descendents -- and the kids would go crazy for both bands just the same. Koontz's take on punk rock as something to be lived, breathed and grinded -- not a genre confined by strict rules. Nobodys Hero's music is abrasively clear. Blending elements of street punk, tough guy hardcore and California skate punk, Nobodys Hero's self-titled debut CD is the result of years of studying punk rock history. "In school, they have music history classes, but, there's no history of punk class. If you want to learn about punk rock, you have to do it yourself," says Koontz. Do it yourself is what he does. When Against All Authority disbanded in 2007, Koontz didn't miss a beat. AAA was one of Miami's most successful and beloved punk bands in the '90s -- their fuck-authority-attitude is one kids all across the globe love to bite into. In Nobodys Hero, Koontz and co. take the blind rage of AAA and focus it sharply. On the song "Effective Aggresion," Koontz is just as pissed as he was when he sung the AAA classic "Hard As Fuck," except on the new track the music has harder edge than AAA ever did. Plus, it's not about smashing a brick into a cop's face. Koontz says, "it's about turning that anger into something positive. Getting up and doing something productive with that aggression.

Let’s get shit straight here; Miami is known for a ton of things that usually revolve around pretty things, money, beautiful beaches, a trifecta of evil genius basketball players and the Sarussi sandwich (okay, maybe that last part about Sarussi isn’t completely true, but fuck, at least Man vs. Food thinks so!). One thing is certain; we are not famous for our punk rock. Unfortunately, the thump thump thump of our bass and shaking asses of our lovely ladies tend to leave everything else in a dark, often overlooked corner.With the exception of a handful of punk/hardcore bands that have ventured out beyond the hood and made an impact on the rest of the world’s ears, Miami and punk rock do not seem to wanna hold hands. That does NOT mean that we don’t have the bands with the talent. There are a million factors that contribute to the anemic support of our local punk/hardcore bands, but I’m not gonna sit here and play “bitter old scene guy” with you, instead I’m going to use my loudest carnie barker voice and direct your attention to center stage, where we have the newest effort from local punk machine, Nobodys Hero! The guys shot me their new album, hot off the press (or the digital music pancake maker, whatever spits out awesome hot punk albums) and I have to say this: YOU NEED IT! This album is really a motherfucking ripper! With solid production and an assault that makes me feel like Wile E. Coyote taking a cannonball to the dome, there should be no reason for you to not seek this one out. The self titled album will release early next year and I suspect it to be one of the most talked about releases among local punk rockers (and hopefully, beyond) next year. The record (yes, I STILL call them RECORDS…sue me!) opens like an air raid. The sing-a-long goodness of Keep Up The Fight really sets the stage for the rest of the album, which is a classic collection of anthems with blazing riffs and the always commanding, snarling vocals by Joe Koontz really make you feel like you MUST fight, no questions asked. Blasting full speed ahead unless slowing down only to make room for a nice breakdown chock full of gang vocals or a military-like march (courtesy of drummer Doug McKinnon), the tempos really grab a hold of you and remind you of what moves you…that feeling that impulsively makes you jump into a pit at a show and let loose. I listen to many different styles of music, but tracks like this remind me why I will always love punk rock. The album is full of gems like this, the themes ranging from fighting for what you believe in (Can’t Take This), the bonds of friendship (By Your Side), songs like All Kings Fall, reminding us that it’s not always grand when you’re on top, you can always be toppled.
