Nolan Neal's love for music shows in his performan by By Tamara McClaran
The modern rock sounds of Nolan Neal are becoming a Wednesday night staple at Ragtime Tavern in Atlantic Beach. Musician Nolan Neal finds inspiration for his songwriting at the beach. "I like to walk on the beach and sing to the ocean," he says. GARY WILCOX/The Times-Union Neal recently came to Jacksonville for a visit and decided that he couldn't leave. I came for seven days, have stayed for 2 1/2 months and only brought clothes to last me a week," he said with a laugh. The 23-year-old artist, who calls Nashville and eastern Tennessee home, plays guitar, drums, bass and keyboards in a range of musical styles that show the influence of Stone Temple Pilots, Tonic, Alice In Chains and Vergos Merlot. My music is modern rock with soul," he said. "I put my heart into it." Neal is a free spirit whose passion for music fuels his sound. He admits he is obsessed with music and is a candidate for 'musicians anonymous.' I love to play and I love to write," he said. "If I wasn't playing here tonight, I'd be playing in someone's living room." His friendship with vocalist Brent Smith of the band Shinedown brought Neal to Jacksonville. I think his band is so amazing and I thought that I would find the perfect talent here," he said. "I decided to stay in Jacksonville to write music." Neal earned the weekly gig at Ragtime after wowing the management team with his unique style. We like his voice, his charisma and we think he fits in really well," said Katy Millan, a Ragtime manager who books the bands. "Nolan's voice is incredible and he is something special for us. We believe this guy is going to be something one day." Neal is looking to form a band with other musicians who also play multiple instruments. He says the beach has been a source of inspiration for his writing. I write some of my best lyrics when I'm out there," he said. "I like to walk on the beach and sing to the ocean. It makes me feel like someone is listening even though they're not." Being heard above life's challenges is a current theme in Neal's work. His song, Deafening, is about people who don't listen and make you feel as though you are talking to walls. As an artist, however, he is determined to attract an audience that listens. This is for You is the title of his CD sampler. The message in his lyrics is healing and inspiring. Neal said he focuses all of his energy on his lyrics and that they come from the heart. I want to reach people with my music and make them feel better if I can," he said.
