Exciting, Challenging, Great, Frustrating, Empowering…..these are just some of the words that describe the experience of recording my first project, “Urban Sophistication” on my label 710 Muzic. Since starting this journey, the pursuit of an album deal led to more closed doors than I ever imagined. These experiences definitely made me stronger and encouraged me to adapt the slogan, “Digitally Independent”. I decided to use the new digital age to help with my independence as an artist. It gave me the freedom to put together my own body of music with full creative license. I fashioned the sound and image that I wanted and am now presenting it to you.
Producing this project wasn’t easy. My studio wasn’t high tech. I did not have the luxury of getting away to an exotic location like the Bahamas or Jamaica … (although that would’ve been nice lol). In fact most songs (with the exception of the ones that my friend and brother Dontae Winslow produced) were recorded in a closet that doubled as a makeshift studio, LOL! (hey, you have to start somewhere.) I found that I could get my vocals just the way I wanted them while being my own sound engineer and vocal producer. I learned different things about my voice and challenged myself to produce a better performance. The end product, once mixed and mastered, really surprised me. I’m my own worse critic, yet I was able to make a product that I am very proud of.
When I approached this project I thought about what I missed on the radio. There is some great music out there but I miss music that features vocal styling. While this digital age affords music makers the opportunity to build on what nature started, it has also taken away what is special about the human voice. I wanted to bring that vulnerability and purity bring back in my music. Laying killer vocals over hot tracks is my staple and I expect my fans to hold me to it. I came up with the name, “Urban Sophistication”, to introduce my style of merging new age, urban tracks with sophisticated, classic vocals. (God, I hope it works….LOL!)
