Street Pharmacy on DisBand by Maryanne Firth
Street Pharmacy is using stone, bricks and mortar to help secure its spot in the music industry. The Welland band -- consisting of Ryan Guay (vocals/ guitar), Nate Triano (guitar), Brandon Ventresca (bass) and Dan Fretz (drums) -- recently recorded a single, Stone Bricks and Mortar, with renowned Canadian producer Greig Nori. Street Pharmacy connected with the Treble Charger front man when the band filmed an upcoming episode of the MuchMusic show DisBand, which will air Dec. 1 at 6 p. m. and 9 p. m. DisBand takes unsigned groups, pairs them with a musical guru (Nori) and pits them against music industry experts who decide whether or not the band has what it takes. Although they can't reveal the outcome of the show, it seems Street Pharmacy's headed in the right direction for success. The band was contacted by a MuchMusic rep, urging them to send in an audition tape for the show. Guay admits there wasn't much debate between the members before deciding to give it a go. Not many people get this opportunity," he said about the show, which was filmed with the Wellanders from Sept. 28 to Oct. 4. The band, he said, is thrilled that people all over the country will be able to experience Street Pharmacy's unique mix of alternative rock and reggae. It's a tool to get us out there," Guay said of DisBand, adding not everyone was pleased with the band's decision to do the show. It's all about how you use it. It's a good tool to get the word out. We know who we are. I'm excited that we got Welland on TV," Guay said, adding a portion of the 30-minute episode was filmed in the Rose City. We were able to bring our small town on national TV. It's great for the city and it's great for us. The band hopes to make a stop in its home town to perform at least once more before the end of 2009, and hopes to film another video in the Rose City in the near future. We love Welland. We're all about Welland," Guay said. Street Pharmacy will begin recording their new album -- A Perfect Convenience -- in December, with Nori as producer. They've signed a licensing deal with Nori's production company, Bunk Rock Music. Greig Nori's at the centre of all this. It's been great working with him. The single, Stone Bricks and Mortar, will be released on iTunes hopefully within a week of their DisBand episode airing, he added. We're excited to be back in the studio with a new record," Guay said, adding half the tracks will have a more reggae feel, and the other half more alt rock. Bands have to evolve," he said, adding they "turned the distortion peddle up a lot more" with their new tune. Just before the DisBand episode was filmed, the band received "a lot of calls and interest from the industry," he said. Many of the calls came thanks to the boys' third albumThe Legacy of Rudy-- which was recorded in Cuba. The band is currently gaining radio play in the U. S. on major radio stations in five states. It's crazy that this is all happening at once," Guay said. It's something we've really wanted for a long time," Nate Triano added. We're learning as we go. This is an exciting time for us, not knowing what's next. We're definitely proud. We've had a lot of accomplishments over our three years," Triano said, adding the band's quick success is motivating. Street Pharmacy's focus now lies on putting together a "dream team" to help manage aspects of their careers, Guay said. Now that they've found the right producer, the band is in search of the right manager for the job. Viewers will have the opportunity to see a bit of the band's chemistry with their new producer when the DisBand episode airs. It features footage of Street Pharmacy and Nori working together in the studio. He's our guru. He's helped us to make some tough decisions," Guay said. He said meeting and working with Nori has been an exciting time for him in particular because he grew up listening to Treble Charger. He's an inspiration to me. To work with someone you've been influenced by is pretty cool. He believes in the tunes. He's one of the biggest producers in Canada. DisBand verdict music to Street Pharmacy's ears by Tribune Staff
WELLAND — City band Street Pharmacy faced the music on reality show DisBand Wednesday night — and the verdict was music to their ears. The MuchMusic show, which features struggling musicians, lets them know whether they have what it takes or whether they should "disband. In the case band members of Ryan Guay (vocals/ guitar), Nate Triano (guitar), Brandon Ventresca (bass) and Dan Fretz (drums), they have what it takes. Votes from online fans will be used in the season finale — for which no date is yet available — to determine what band should get the rockstar treatment and what bands will be left backstage. The public can vote online at www.muchmusic.com/streetpharmacy. Guay is encouraging all the residents of his hometown to support the band by downloading their new single Stone Bricks and Mortar on iTunes. If they receive 20,000 downloads, Guay says that he would give back to the community by donating a portion of the money from the downloaded single to help fund a youth centre in Welland. Street Pharmacy has also gotten a distribution deal for their Legacy of Rudy album with the help of DisBand judge — producer and former frontman from Treble Charger — Greig Nori, Brian Huston and Matt Brann through Bunk Rock Entertainment/ Fontana North. Nori will also be producing their upcoming album, A Perfect Convenience.
