THIS IS RADIO FREEDOM is a band dedicated in name and spirit to action, movement and excitement. The band performed last summer alongside Primal Scream, Iggy Pop and The Charlatans and evolved into a new outfit, complete with fresh impetus and direction... Taken from the ANC's pirate radio station, the name is intended to reflect the spirit in which the band was created. Punk, Madness in any direction, at any hour... you could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right... that we were winning. HST, 1971. 'Strike Sparks Anywhere' is the first EP release from THIS IS RADIO FREEDOM, a band dedicated in name and spirit to action, movement and excitement. Also included is a remix of 'Family Man' by Dan Le Sac, who hit the UK Top spot last year with 'Thou Shalt Always Kill'. Since their birth in early 2008, THIS IS RADIO FREEDOM have secured a great level of support - from their home grown fan base to internationally recognized artists, from UK and US radio jocks to places as far away as Hollywood and Sydney. Primal Scream, PiL, Death in Vegas, My Bloody Valentine... all names that have been thrown around whilst describing this rock/electro act. And what the band capture live, The Guardian refer to as "electro-rock and roll and its flammable best!" There are few acts in todays 'indie' scene capable of generating this level of depth and impact on stage and record. Recently recorded with Junk Scientist, the EP is a salute to the artists that fly closer to the sun than most... Bukowski, Thompson, Wolfe amidst many others. The band's name is taken from the ANC's pirate radio station, famous for illegal broadcasts during South Africa's recent troubled past. Intended to reflect a love for change, impetus, direction and drive - "The track 'Strike Sparks Anywhere' is a statement of intent rather than an attempt to staple ourselves to any one particular political motif..." says lead singer Matt Rimmer. "It's not part of any agenda - we, as a band, just happen to get off on and riled about a lot of the same things. In generations past, people wanted to leave a positive mark on history, but that seems less important now. Everything is transitory. This is about people who give a shit about something, whether it's fashionable or not... and so that's why it sounds like it does." This certainly comes across in the live show, toured across the UK in May in an Academy tour with Alabama 3. THIS IS RADIO FREEDOM have managed to garner an excellent stage reputation, both at home and abroad. Returning from the tour they were invited to play a series of shows at Toronto's NXNE festival, including the headline slot at the festival's closing party. Tours for the end of 2008 are in the pipeline - see this show when it crosses your yard, and if it doesn't - leave your yard and see this band before your neighbor and every other punter does! New York Rock Sound Mag, July 08. Leading to 2009, THIS IS RADIO FREEDOM will be recording the follow up to the 'Strike Sparks Anywhere' EP and heading out across the UK and Europe. Following the success of 'Bombthreat' in the US and Canada - addition to over 280 college stations, top 5 CMJ, cable television plays - and included on your copy of this EP - there have been a series of interesting offers and follow ups from across the Atlantic - THIS IS RADIO FREEDOM will return in the Autumn.
