Chandler native and Corona Del Sol ’07 graduate, Torin Dinh, is new to the Phoenix music scene and is all ready a success. Dinh describes his sound as Pop Rock Acoustic and is influenced by Howie Day, Brighten, John Mayer, and girls. His first step into writing his own music came with a case of heartbreak. “Cliché, I know, but the situation produced half a dozen songs,” says Dinh. Torin is growing as a musician by playing in local coffee shops and at venues across the valley. As of now, Dinh does not have any scheduled shows, he is focused on producing a new CD. Voice of the Pride: What can you tell me about your instruments? (i.e., Are you subject to brand loyalty or will you play with whatever’s available? What made you choose the instruments you have now?) Torin Dinh: I have a Takamine EAN40C Acoustic Guitar. I got it as a Christmas present several years ago and basically asked for it because it was an identical model Howie Day played, who I saw as my idol for a long time. I like Martin acoustic guitars and Fender electrics though. VOTP: Which songs do you perform most frequently? Do you ever play any covers? Do you have a set play list? TD: I used to play a lot of covers when I started out, I don’t anymore. I play songs that I like and that I know the audience will like which are songs both of us usually agree on. I change my set list for every show, but usually the same 2 or 3 songs get played every time. VOTP: What has been your biggest challenge as an artist? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how? TD: Biggest challenge as a solo artist is to get people to know who I am and like what they hear. It’s challenging when I have to do things on my own but hopefully I will overcome this. VOTP: What’s your ultimate direction for yourself? Are you seeking fame and fortune? TD: I’m just seeking exposure and for people to hear me and know who I am. I would like to make a living out of this and live comfortably but exposure of my music and changing people’s lives is my main goal. VOTP: How has your music evolved since you first began playing music? TD: I’ve grown into a style of my own and my skills in singing and guitar playing have definitely improved over time with repetition and keeping up with my music. VOTP: One place you would want to play a show at? TD: In Arizona, the Marquee Theater. In the U.S., Radio City Music Hall or pretty much anywhere in New York.
