Live Review: Meet Seattle's Cutest Pop Band, Go Periscope. by Erika Hobart - Seattle Weekly
I met Go Periscope's Joshua Frazier and Florin Mehedinti at the King Cat Theatre where Basshunter performed back in June. I ran into them again post-concert at the Hurricane and proceeded to sit down (uninvited) at their table and eat most of Frazier's hashbrowns. He didn't complain once. These are nice guys. If you don't listen to c89.5 FM: Go Periscope is a Seattle-based duo consisting of Frazier (vocals, keyboard, guitar) and Mehedinti (vocals, keyboard.) They play electronic-pop music. Their song "Crush Me" reached no. 1 on c89.5's top five most requested song list. Impressive, considering they're up against names like David Guetta, Cascada, and Lady GaGa. A note about why they played this venue: The two-year anniversary of the social network Girl Power Hour. It should go without saying that Fox Sports Grill isn't at all ideal for live music. But really, what sports bar is? Regarding the crowd: Really attractive people in their 20s and 30s intent on acting out their Sex and the City fantasies by wearing clothes far too fancy for anywhere in Seattle. Kudos to Mehedinti for having fun with it and rocking a bright blue hooded sweatshirt over his suit. Performance notes: Last night marked only the second time that Go Periscope has performed live in front of an audience. They were very charismatic, but their onstage presence doesn't quite match the energy their synth-pop anthems exude. I'm attributing that to inexperience or, more likely, the fact that they were performing in a two by two foot space in Fox fucking Sports Grill. Regardless, they got the Carrie Bradshaws and Samantha Joneses in the bar to dance. Even the bartender bobbed his head along to the music. If you want to check out Go Periscope: Their self-titled debut album is "coming soon," according to their MySpace page. They've got five tracks there that you can listen to right now. "Breathe Deception" is my favorite. It's a pop gem that you should feel guilty for loving but can't, because the guys sound so damn earnest on it. Listen to it here. But be warned, it will be stuck in your head for hours.

Techno, Pop, Alternative, Electronica; the different genres of music I attempted placing the unique sound of Go Periscope under. And after much consideration I came to the conclusion that band members Josh and Florin have created a sound that transcends all genres. "We have taken all the different parts of music that we love, mashed it together in a blender and created something different and unusual. The buzz surrounding the recent launch of their self titled album seems to be growing everyday. With a debut of their song "Emily" and "No Chaser" being featured on MTV's Real World and Qxygen's hit show Bad Girls Club, to performing their first show with 500 screaming fans in attendance, there is no doubt that Go Periscope is rising quickly to the top. "At this point because we are so new, its surprising that everything is growing so fast. The 15 track album is an emotional roller coaster of personal accounts from both Josh and Florin's relationships. "We didn't follow any specific theme for this album. It is a compilation of our scattered thoughts and emotions." And while the lyrics may be serious, the up beat tempo is worthy of any night club or party. " Each song flows in a different direction. Hopefully it touches you and makes you want to get up and dance. I sat down with the boys to discuss their overnight success, creative process and future plans. What is the meaning behind the group name Go Periscope? Florin: The concept of a periscope is your viewing something undetected. Like on a submarine. We are trying to show the world what we are all about though our music. Our lyrics harmonies and melodies are our periscope to the world. We can look out and our fans can look in. Did you consider any other names? Josh: The process of coming up with a group name was funny and ridiculous! We played around with a few names before we settled on Go Periscope. Florin: Yea we would just throw out random ideas like, lets be Poptart Philosophy!(LAUGH) Josh: Or NSFW, Not Safe For Work! (LAUGH) What is your creative process like? Florin: There's a really long pre-production process that goes on that Josh and I do separately. We work on lyrics or get some kind of inspiration for a melody. Then come together to work on it in the studio. There's a lot of tweaking. It's normally a 16 hour process that begins with a melody then lyrics. Josh: There's a lot of energy drink consumption and us sitting in the studio for hours! We write all of our own music. So if one of us is stuck on a bridge or chorus, the other is always there to help bounce ideas off of. Its an incredible feeling to see the end result of a song that just started with a tiny idea. What is your favorite song on the album? Florin: That's easy, "Rollin' With The Dead". It sounds stupid but its my favorite because I know its going to be the most fun to perform live. I love the theme of it, the flow of it and I think it's where our sound is. Josh: If I had to pick one I think "Rollin' With The Dead" too. It's a combination of everything we've learned while recording our album. This song exemplifies where we are musically the best. How did you feel when you found out "Emily" was being played on MTV? Florin: We were contacted by a production company that does theme shows for MTV. They said they liked our music and wanted to license our album, to be potentially played on one of their shows. And then they used it on Real World! Josh: After the show people started posting our music. After the episode aired the blogs just erupted with comments. That was really cool. We gained a lot of fans because of it. It was a surreal moment for us. Florin: I think after we've made it, we will be able to look back and remember how big that was for us. Do you have any plans to tour your debut album? Josh: We're planning to have a mini-tour this spring along the west coast. Florin:Once we've got the financial part down we will announce it. What can we expect from Go Periscope in the up coming months? Josh: We're always creating new music. We're constantly writing and recording. We try to keep our thoughts always fresh. But for now the main focus is getting our music out to reach as many people as we can. Getting signed by a label and getting a tour in progress would be great. Florin: We are in the process of doing a music video so that's exciting! Our goal right now is to create a buzz, a wave. And with their first album already making it iTunes top 20, it won't be long until Go Periscope becomes a house hold name. "When your living it its totally different then when you're dreaming it. We feel so lucky to be doing what we love.
