Stereo Subversion by Larson's full-length debut is a smart pop-rock gem
Jules Larson might not be a household name yet, but chances are good that you are familiar with her music even if you aren’t aware that you are. Two successful and critically-acclaimed EPs — 2009’s Strangers and 2010’s A Lot Like You — have preceded this full-length debut, and her tracks have appeared on TV shows (“Castle,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Pretty Little Liars”) and film soundtracks (“The Lucky One”). Her material has grown stronger with each release, and on Let’s Stay Young she explodes with her most well-rounded effort yet. Larson’s is a curious and recognizable voice all at once: subtle and slightly scratchy in one instance, full and angelic the next. Whether lamenting a lost love in the ethereal shuffler “Rocketship,” reminiscing about vibrant youth in “Children of Stereo” (which sounds like a distant relative of Tom Petty’s “Learning to Fly”) or aggressively demonstrating her desire for someone in the smoky, soulful rocker “I Want it All,” Larson’s singing has a quality that holds on to you tight and doesn’t let go. She is equal parts Adele, Duffy and Grace Potter all wrapped in one, and that’s a pretty dynamic combination. Musically, the album goes in a number of directions successfully. “Foolish Love” is the sort of jangly rock that fans of Phoenix should love, her piano ballad cover of “True Colors” is a great showcase song for her vocal abilities that adds a nice nostalgic strain to the record, and “Strangers” takes the cake as the album’s most memorable song with its hypnotic piano ballad-meets ambient folk sound. Young is largely fixated on love in its many forms: love lost, found, longed for, remembered — hell, sometimes it isn’t even about romantic love. Between the title track itself, “Children of Stereo” and “Running Wild,” you have a trio of songs dedicated to the love of life and vitality and embracing everything that makes life worth living. There is love in those songs too; it might not be as obvious, but it’s there. Let’s Stay Young is a smart, creative record that will leave you begging for more.
