Description

This is an original song in folk style that appears on the instrumental album Sugarloaf Licks. I am publishing what is a very basic acoustic version with vocal as a free track because the vocal is by Avanna, the Vocaloid and may interest people as a demo. The lyrics were written first as a poem, and are published in full here, but the two last verses are omitted from the recording.

Lyrics

Child of the forest, with the flowers and the trees all around you, Where will you go when no-one has a flock to drive? You were free, a mountain rover But the Summer is over, Changes like an avalanche surround you– Can a single tree survive? I’ve seen you stand, when the candles of Christmas were glowing, Still as a man of stone among the rushing crowds; Once in early Spring I passed you On your way to high pasture, To the echoes and pure water flowing By your shelter in the clouds. All of the flocks that you brought down are peacefully sleeping, All of your schoolfriends moved away or dead and gone; There’s a farm that will receive you, A soft bed to relieve you, But you’ll never see your lover weeping When you rise and carry on. Last of the shepherds, with all that you own on your shoulder, Maybe you have some savings or a place somewhere; But you wear rough wool and leather That have seen years of weather And your face is like a craggy boulder, Sunset red but lined with care.
