The One Room School house There’s a lonely weathered building just outside of town It hasn’t had too much attention since they took the old bell down Made of rough cut wood and limestone for teachin’ children in It’s the little one room school house wish we had ‘em back again They didn’t ride on diesel busses little trails lead north and south East and west and all directions A path from every house They didn’t have to raise the taxes to build a great big gym I suppose that all that walkin’ kept those children thin (chorus) In that little one room school house where they taught common sense You had the right to your opinion you didn’t have to ride the fence Where you learned about Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn In that little one room school Wish we had ‘em back again The father of our country had his picture on the wall They brought their own sack lunches and at recess they’d play ball Jump rope and run some races not everyone would win In that little one room school house wish we had ‘em back again They didn’t have air conditioning they cut wood for the fall The kids would bring the fire wood in the ones that had gotten tall There were children of all ages somehow they all fit in That little one room school house wish we had ‘em back again (chorus) The board of education was made of sanded oak People laughed about it but it wasn’t any joke Back then correcting children was not considered sin In that little one room school house wish we had ‘em back again They didn’t do math on computers just a black board with white chalk The teacher was respected, talk the talk and walk the walk Every morning pledge of allegiance then they’d bow their heads to pray In that little one room school house wish we had ‘em back today © Garry Bichelmeyer 8/30/’11
