"The Rebel" tells the story of a homeless Vietnam veteran who used to live on the streets of Champaign-Urbana, IL; Carl Hauck - vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica, bass; Bryan Kveton - electric guitar, saxophone; Brian Trahan - piano, organ; Dan Yadron - bass
Great song. I'm old school as my name might imply, but this crosses generational lines. My 21 year-old son loved it as well. I personally sided with Darowyn initially regarding the sax solo and would like to hear it with more presence. That said, my son loved how the sax solo gave the piece depth, as if this was the Rebel himself playing off in the shadows. I liked his visual reference and so I am going to keep listening to that part with a new point of view.
With a verse at close to Bluegrass tempo, and a slower, very exposed, chorus, the song tells a story of the futility of war, and the changes of tempo make the message hit the listener very hard This is a brilliant piece of work, musically, lyrically, and from a recording point of view If you are reading this to decide whether to listen to, or buy the track- Do it! It's the best song I've ever heard on OurStage. Any film makers out there.. here's a seven minute pitch for your next project My only criticism would be of the rather dodgy Sax sound.
