Description

While driving from Valentine, Nebraska, to the Badlands National Park one day in 2003 we came to White River, South Dakota. The town has a strong Lakota heritage, which was evident in its streets. I spotted some Native American boys playing together and wondered what life is like in this small Western town. The boys appeared care free and happy.

Lyrics

There's a little town called White River Where there isn't much to do It puts things in perspective Even when you are just passing through I saw you standing on the corner with the world in your hands Too old to believe in fairy tales But still too young to understand that you can win Johnny what's it like in White River Under the South Dakota sky? Does the rain come down in White River Like it comes down on a New York night? Johnny don't you let go of your dreams Promise me you never will No matter how impossible they seem God will help you, child, to climb those hills And you'll win Johnny you will win When the sun goes down in White River Do your people feel afraid? Or do they rest in comfort without caring about What anybody else says? Johnny I hope you will find your way May your voice always be heard May you get to know yourself someday And learn that "love" is not a simple word No matter if you stay or if you leave May the innocence in your eyes never fade Just look towards your Savior And listen, boy, to what I say and you'll win Johnny you will win Johnny you will win Johnny you will win White River White River White River
