I've written several songs that began with a poem. This one was much different. I was playing with some chord progressions trying to put together something that didn't sound like my previous work. I found the chords but I couldn't find the sequence I wanted. Once I locked in the verse I reversed some of the chords and added some delay for the chorus and everything began falling into place.
Lyrics
I didn't have a subject theme yet, and I didn't want another "you done me wrong" kind of song. My wife suggested that it be something about not being able to sleep, but when I added mesmerizing my topic focused on that as a condition. I threw in Hypnotizing to emphasize it. The structure was such that I was able to keep the sentences short and simple. I like most of my work, but I've been really pleased with how this song balanced between the lyrics, the beat, and all of the instrumentation.
