Maloney wins WROR Townie Tune Contest by Local Medford
Medford - Michael Maloney never thought that at 17 he would have his first hit single on the radio. But by beating out more than 100 contestants from as far away as Maine in the 105.7 Townie Tune contest, the local teen is cashing in on his success. Maloney’s sentimental tune, “The Long and Winding Road to Medford,” won him a $5,000 royalty check on Oct. 25 and WROR’s Tom Doyle will be singing his adaptation of the famous Beatles song on his next “Townie Tunes” album, available at record stores throughout New England. You could have cut the tension in the air with a knife the morning Maloney and the other finalists waited live, behind the scenes on the “Loren & Wally Show,” to find out who would take the grand prize. “It was just like you’re watching ‘American Idol,’” recalled Maloney, adding that around 8:30 a.m. the station announced the top three songs and played a minute of each. “And they said, ‘The number one song — after this commercial break,’ and you’re just ready to have a heart attack.” Then it happened. Maloney’s song won. His father, Fintan, jumped out of his seat and the young musician hugged nearly everyone in the room. Aside from the excitement of having a song recorded about his hometown, Maloney’s accomplishment has also attracted attention from the State House. On Nov. 4, the Medford High School senior received a citation of appreciation from Rep. Paul Donato, D-Medford, and Speaker Salvatore DiMasi on Beacon Hill. “I was very proud on behalf of Speaker DiMasi and the State House to present the citation of appreciation to Michael,” said Donato, adding the song not only brought good publicity to Medford, but that Maloney should also be rewarded for his exemplary community involvement. The music man Music has been a part of Maloney’s life since he was very young. During his 10 years studying piano, he has taken to regularly entertaining at nursing homes. He also knows his way around the guitar, violin, harmonica and drums. At the age of 15, Maloney was interviewed on WBZ's “Jordan Rich Show” for writing another Beatles-inspired rock song about New Hampshire. He currently displays some of his tunes on his MySpace page: www.myspace.com/michaelmmusic. “He started writing songs when he was in the sixth grade,” said mom Ann Maloney. She said even though her son is looking into studying biology when he goes to college, he might have what it takes to become a professional musician. Especially if his Townie Tunes career takes off. Maloney said he first found out about the contest when his friend, Allison McCarthy, said he’d be perfect for it. But it was the Friday before the contest’s deadline and time was scarce. The teen said he knew he’d have to rewrite the lyrics to a famous song to say something about his hometown, make it funny and keep it under three minutes. The song took him two days. “I knew it would be competitive, so I tried to pack as much information in there as I could,” said Maloney, adding the song touches on Medford residents’ refusal to yield in rotaries, the high number of Dunkin’ Donuts in the city and how the high school’s football team always has a tough time tackling challengers from Malden. Once Maloney discovered his song was actually in the running, he mobilized his school to vote for it. He says his parents and sister, Katie, were a big help in getting the word out and he could not have done it without them and his friends. So what will Maloney do with his $5,000? “A huge portion is going to go toward college,” he said. “I’ll probably take a few hundred for myself and for Christmas presents.”

- Allison Goldsberry According to WROR, Medford High School senior Michael Maloney is the best in the state when it comes to putting poking fun at his hometown to music. The teen recently bested 80 other “townie tunes” in a radio contest with his parody of the Beatles song “The Long and Winding Road.” The song parody, “The Long and Winding Road to Medford,” earned Maloney $5,000 and a trip to WROR’s Boston studio. Maloney, whose many musical talents span from singing to drums to the violin to the piano, said he wrote the song in just one weekend. He then recorded himself singing and playing the piano and sent it along to the radio station. “If you play the piano and you’re a Beatles’ fan, ‘The Long and Winding Road’ is one of the ones you have to know,” said Maloney. Maloney did not have to look far for inspiration. From Medford’s curiously high number of Dunkin Donuts to its famous residents, nothing was safe from a little good-natured musical ribbing. “I thought it would be good to give facts and try to make it funny,” said Maloney. Here are just a few gems from the song, which pokes fun at the city as well as highlighting its unique features: “We’ve got a bad mall. It’s one story tall. It’s called the Meadow Glenn. I don’t remember when it had more than seven stores.” “It may sound absurd, we’re the home town to Michael Bloomberg.” “Many times I want to see our high school football team win, but they always get defeated by the team from Malden.” “We’re home to Maria Menounos, she now lives on the West Coast.” “We’ve got houses from the Revolution, we made a Guiness Book of World Records contribution.” Listen the Maloney’s entire song here. Soon the musical teen will head to WROR’s studios to record the song with Tom Doyle. The tune will join other townie jingles on a CD to be sold throughout New England. And as for that $5,000, Maloney plans to save most of it for college, where he will study music and medicine.

“Love songs are the easiest to write,” Maloney said. “I like optimistic songs. Music is about helping people.” Maloney has been playing the piano for nine years, but noticing that most popular bands have guitarists, he started learning the guitar four years ago. Beatles songs sound better on guitar anyway, he said... Maloney said sometimes a phrase he overhears on the train, or a headline in the newspaper will catch his eye or ear, inspiring him to write a song around it, drawing.

Fellow UMass student Michael Maloney is showing great promise with his musical abilities. They are not only apparent listening to his album First Step which is available on iTunes and Amazon, but also through the many gigs he has done. Singing since the age of nine, this driven artist put a large amount of time towards improving his vocal sound and getting his music out there for the public to enjoy. His weekends are filled with gigs at local churches, nursing homes, and the occasional wedding. During the week he teaches the a capella group 8 Voices, on campus (which you can join by contacting him at Michael.Maloney002@umb.edu) and also teaches a music class at Snowdon High School once a week to students who have little to no musical experience. Michael was nice enough to sit down with the Mass Media for a few minutes and answer some questions. When did you start getting into music? When I was little my parents told me that I used to wave my hands around like a conductor. I started getting more serious with music after I hurt my hip and couldn't do sports; music was always there. I started singing for my church choir at the age of nine and performed in plays every summer during middle school. What instruments do you play, and when did you start playing them? I began piano at age eight, then guitar at 13, drums, bass and violin during high school, ukulele at 19. I play all the instruments on my album. When you do that it's more of an autobiography and you own every inch of every song. You know me and get to know the deepest side of who I am. Do you write your own music, and if so do you draw inspiration from your life? Yes I do, and yes totally. For example "Taller" was about a girl who received prosthetic limbs. Once she had them she was so confident that even though she was still shorter than the rest of her classmates she was still like "I'm cooler!" And I thought about confidence and what a relationship should be like and how you should complement each other. I happen to be in a long distance relationship right now. She's in Berlin this semester. Even though it is hard, she's lovely, so I draw a lot of inspiration from our relationship for my music. I'm a corny guy. Do you perform or have any gigs? I sing at three to four different churches, perform at nursing homes, do the occasional wedding or funeral. I've also done a few fundraisers and have one coming up at my old high school for senior scholarships. I'm also performing at Best Buy on Newbury Street in June. Were you ever in a band? I was in a band for 2 years, in high school, and then going into UMass Boston. There were a lot of late nights. The lead singer was 35 and the rest were in their 30's and then there was me at 17. I met them at an open mic night in Malden that I went to every week. The band was rock, pop and called Airtraffic Controller; the lead singer was an air traffic controller. Very impressive, have you ever received any awards? In 2007, on WROR 105.7. I'm a big fan of the oldies. they were having a contest for writing a parody about your hometown and I wrote "The long and winding road to Medford." There were over 100 people from all over, from Maine to Massachusetts and I came in first place. I was on 950 AM WROL this past Sunday; they do Irish music on Saturdays and Sundays. They're having a contest called "Irish Idol" and I called in, I didn't win but I was in the 5 finalists. I performed live at a pub this past Sunday and it went across the air and they have about 5 million viewers. Lastly, do you have any advice for student songwriters and musicians? Keep your eyes and ears open, and always keep a pen and paper on you to jot phrases, words, and ideas down. Many of my songs originate from a phrase, which typically becomes the title, from there I map out a story that the title implies, and build the song around that. Also, record your music and perform your music, get it out there to be heard. And write what you know, from your own experiences. Lets all keep an eye out for this talented young artist. Medford resident a finalist in "irish idol" by
Medford — Medford resident Michael Maloney was a finalist and runner up in the “Irish Idol” singing competition earlier this month. Sullivan Tire & Auto Service sponsored the “Irish Idol” singing competition in conjunction with radio station Irish 950AM. Throughout the course of the last two months, listeners of WROL radio station were invited to call in to sing their way into the competition. Maloney beat out more than 50 entrants to move on to the final 5, where he was asked to visit the WROL studio and record a song which was uploaded to the Sullivan Tire and WROL web sites. More than 11,000 votes were cast in an online vote. The winner received a trip for two to Ireland. School holds Scholarship Benefit Concert by
Medford Public Schools Fine Arts Department Presents: Benefit Concert for Senior Scholarships Featuring: The Carter Twins and Medford?s Michael Maloney Friday, February 12, 2010 7:30PM, Caron Theatre, Medford High School Come on out and enjoy young, up and coming talent while supporting senior Fine Arts students! All proceeds from the concert will go towards senior scholarships. ?We really wanted to do something special for our seniors. The proceeds from this concert will go towards providing scholarships for college,? said Richard Trotta, Director of the Media/Technology and Fine Arts Department for the Medford Public Schools. The concert is generously being sponsored by Brookline Bank, Medford Rotary Club, Warren Ramirez, and Hyatt Place Medford. Country/rock band the Carter Twins will headline the concert, with Medford?s own Michael Maloney opening for them with his original rock tunes. After performing hundreds of live gigs while juggling a busy high school schedule, the Carter Twins burst onto the country scene in 2008 after a chance meeting with an MTV executive in Los Angeles, who ultimately led them to Country Music Television (CMT). The brothers recently completed high school and moved to Nashville to pursue their music career full time under the development of CMT Music and Meteor 17. The Carter Twins were in the select nomination group for this year?s CMT awards, being in the nomination pool for Best New Duo as well as breakthrough Video of the Year. The twins? band includes Brandon Hasinger, electric guitar, Brian Howell, bass guitar, and Tommy Perkinson, drums. Michael Maloney, Vice President of Medford High School's Class of 2008, is currently a sophomore at UMass-Boston, where he is a double major in Health Science and Music. Featured on WBZ's Jordan Rich Show, Michael has taught four workshops at Citi Center (formerly the Wang Theatre), and regularly performs at local nursing homes. He will be backed up by Woburn's Nate Rohr on drums during the concert. Tickets are also available in the Media Department at Medford High School. Their album, set for release in early 2010, is being produced by Frank Rogers, Billboard magazine?s #1 country producer of the Year (25 #1 singles).
