The wheels were set in motion long before vocalist Nick Kelly and bassist Robert Hlavka forged a partnership that would lead to the formation of Third Time’s a Charm. Both had an all-consuming desire to create music and both had enjoyed success, or almost-success in the local Chicago scene before: Robert in the band Waiting for Wilson, and Nick with his band After April. Both bands failed as they were on the brink of breaking through to the national scene. “We met at work and were both so frustrated with the pace of our lives” Nick explains, “I knew that I needed to be writing and performing. Rob was the same way”. They quickly began writing songs and took the name Third Time’s a Charm to honor their previous two attempts at success. It was late autumn of 2007 when Rob called his former band-mate from Waiting For Wilson, guitarist Jim Farley, and offered him a part in making the dream of Third Time’s a Charm a reality. At that time, Jim’s own band, In Silico, had just fallen apart and he and fellow In Silico guitarist, Aaron Tolbert, were looking for musicians to form a new band. The two jumped at the opportunity and the four locked themselves in their basement and continued writing songs. They recorded a few of their early songs and started to create a buzz about themselves. Their goal was to tour the Midwest and East Coast by April of 2008. However, the foursome was still missing one crucial piece: a drummer. They had been working with a drummer but only had a temporary arrangement with him. But time was running out. With tour only weeks away, the four members of Third Time’s a Charm scoured the internet looking for a drummer. They auditioned several different drummers, but none of them were right. Then, one week before tour, they met Emery Goldie, the former drummer from the Chicago-based band Madina Lake (Roadrunner Records). He shared their drive and dedication. In a week, he had learned the songs and they had written and recorded a new song. When they returned from their East Coast tour they secluded themselves in a dingy Chicago practice space and set their minds to writing their debut EP: Rumors & Noise. To produce and engineer their album they hired former Hidden In Plain View (Drive-Thru Records) guitarist, Rob Freeman. “We’re all really big Hidden In Plain View fans and we had a specific sound that we wanted for our album. We knew that Rob would understand our artistic vision” explains guitarist, Aaron Tolbert. The album was recorded in the summer and was released on April 18th of 2009. Shortly before the band opened a groundbreaking House of Blues show Emery left the band to pursue other musical projects and the band was joined by Dormlife drummer Michael DeBoer. Third Time's a Charm co-headlined their CD release at the Metro in Chicago and are currently writing a new record for release in 2010.
