In 2009, drummer Justin Gessner and lead guitarist Tyler Bennett from Chesapeake, VA, formed their band A New Day Rising. The two met while playing with a pop/alternative band called Off The Top, but shortly after, Tyler and Justin left to start their own band and play their more preferred genre of rock. A little over a year later, Tyler and Justin welcomed Kevin Cullen as lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist Brandon Young, and Katy Carroll on bass guitar. The band has been influenced by popular bands such as Foo Fighters, Theory of a Deadman, Saving Abel, Adelitas Way, Alter Bridge, Breaking Benjamin, and Nickelback to name a few. As a matter of fact, the band name, A New Day Rising, was taken from the Foo Fighters song, Times Like These. A New Day Rising had their first public performance at Bayside Inn in Virginia Beach, VA in 2010 during open mic night. Then later that year, they performed locally with other bands at different venues and/or events and in the fall of 2010, they won second place during a battle of the bands event at a local church. As the band continued to grow and start writing their own songs, one of their short term goals was to play at The NorVa in Norfolk, VA. A local concert venue that has hosted shows for bands like Hinder, Tears For Fears, Smashing Pumpkins, and countless others. In 2011, they played a local showcase at The NorVa and was direct support for the headlining band called Sekshun 8. A month later, they landed their own headlining local showcase at The NorVa. After their headlining gig, the band recorded their first demo consisting the following songs: Right Where You Belong, Misery, Candlelight, and War. "Your entertainment value is off the charts!" - Jason Scannell President of Raging Storm Records
