Adam “AP’ Powell is a native of the inner-city community of North East Washington DC. Despite growing up in one the toughest neighborhoods in the country, AP refused to be a statistic. Music literally saved his life. The studio became his refuge from the temptations of life in the “hood”. AP is the product of a rich musical heritage. As a child he sang with his mother Joy Powell, an accomplished singer who has performed with the likes of Patti Labelle among others. Although naturally gifted as a vocalist and poet, music was little more than a hobby until he found out that his sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was at this point, that he saw music as a way to provide for his family. After recording his first tracks in the basement of his home, AP quickly began making a name for him self in the local DC hip hop scene while still in high school. With in a short period of time AP had songs on regular mix show rotation on two of the largest urban formatted radio stations in the DC Metro Area (WPGC and WKYS). Some of AP’s accolades include winning three A&R Showcases and being proclaimed Howard University Homecoming Freestyle Battle Champion two years in a row. A prolific songwriter, AP has sustained him self as a “ghost writer” for various local talent. AP has since worked with artists such as Wale’ and opened for notable artists; Gucci Man, Gorilla Zoe, Young Berg, Freeway, Bow Wow and The Dream. AP has the versatility of being both a superb lyricist with mainstream appeal as well a singer and poet with a depth uncommon to most hip hop artists today.
