Transients, who don’t have a trace of the grit and raw energy that traditionally has been synonymous with the New York music scene, mysteriously reign supreme. They’re individuals who have replaced the darker, sprawling side of the Big Apple with a safe, unimaginative approach. Bones Howell is a beacon to the disenfranchised, a lightning bolt splitting through the trends and hipster obsessions. They’re a rock n’ roll act that knows and respects the history of this great city, while maintaining a modern focus, trying to push their music out of the comfort zones.
Over the past few years, Bones' band members Dark Cave, Tomer and Woodchip have worked to create an album with an unlimited scope, sparring no time or expense to fulfill their vision. After tracking was completed, they took the album to Joe Chiccarelli (Beck, U2, The White Stripes) to be dissected and mixed. Emily Lazar and Joe LaPorta (Foo Fighters, Lou Reed, Depeche Mode) mastered the record—crystallizing its sonic nature and epic storytelling into one cohesive piece. In 10 tracks the album conjures up images of an older New York, using punk, new wave, no wave, goth, and rock with a 21st century imagination.
In the meantime, the group has collaborated with Bauhaus and Love & Rockets member Daniel Ash on a 7” single. Bones Howell reimages of the Bauhaus classic “Hair of the Dog”, while Ash has remixed standout “Nephritis” from the upcoming full-length album. This teaser showcases not only one of Howell’s influences, but also how his own songwriting matches up with a classic. Rarely are risks truly celebrated, but the debut record from Bones Howell illustrates why more artists should take them. This is the time to champion a forward thinking artist."
