Break of Reality is a cello quartet gone mad. Composed of cellists Patrick Laird, Martin Torch-Ishii aka “Torch,” Phil Borter, and drummer/percussionist Ivan Trevino, Break of Reality’s sound is cinematic, subdued and heavy all at once. Their sound can be described as Kronos Quartet meets Apocalyptica with a spice of inspirations filtered from Metallica, System of a Down and Shostakovich. Break of Reality possesses the dexterity to give their audience a classical experience infused with the essential elements of rock, sometimes using exotic percussion such as the African Djembe, which Laird describes as giving the group a “humanistic organic sound.” Diversity is just one of the group's many attributes and they play it well. They have plans to take their music to the greatest extent by “creating a truly international sound that unites the heavy metal crowd with classical listeners and everyone in between.” Laird, the group’s founder, has always had a passion for music. Growing up with musical surroundings from his family, he was destined and motivated to pursue his passion--playing the cello. A music performance major at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, Laird met fellow cellists, Phil Borter and Martin Torch-Ishii (“Torch”), and later met Ivan Trevino, the quartet’s drummer/percussionist. The group began their performance journey at a local Rochester coffee shop, which earned them a front page feature in the local Rochester paper. Since then, their madness has served them well; they are filling concert venues around the country with fans eager to hear “cello rock.” Break of Reality has performed in every type of venue, from popular New York City clubs such as Joe’s Pub and the Knitting Factory, to esteemed classical music halls, such as the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center in New York City and Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music. They have sold over 20,000 copies of their previous album, The Sound Between, and have accrued the likings of international fans. The quartet has also scored music for film and TV, including the PBS program AIR: America's Investigative Reports, which went on to earn an Emmy nomination. The members of Break of Reality are committed to music education and have presented educational workshops and performances for elementary, middle, and high school music students throughout the country. Laird states that the group’s goal is to “inspire kids to find a deeper love for the music that they play, urging them to think outside the box with their instruments.” “The Spectrum of the Sky” was inspired by German artist Dominic Kamp. Laird had stumbled upon Kamp's artwork, now the group's album cover. "We were all completely taken by the photo and thought that it perfectly represented what we were going for on the new album," Laird says. The artwork, titled "Spectrum of the Sky" gave the quartet an ideal inspiration to feature it as their album cover, and "in a matter of time" Patrick states, the title of the album was born. Their album is set to debut on May 16, 2009. With the release of their new album in May, Break of Reality plans to put forth 10 transcending tracks, each encompassing a distinct sound and meaning. The album’s finale, “Anodynia”, contains four movements and was commissioned for Victoria Ballet Theatre in Victoria, TX. Laird describes the origin of the title as an “obscure medical term that means the absence of pain where pain once was. Basically, it's a departure from our standard 'heavy' sound and we thought the title was perfect for those four movements.” “The members of Break of Reality have been applauded for their 'thunderous tone' and their take-no-prisoner approach to cello playing.”- Sacramento Bee Newspaper “Their sound has been described as having “excitement, originality, and an undeniable intensity that louder, heavier bands can only dream of. Break of Reality is going to win a Grammy someday. Bank on it.” –- Rochester City News “Break of Reality plays with genuine techniques and solid intonation, but rocks out like it means it.” -- Time Out New York
