Claire Taubenhaus is a product of her vastly diverse upbringing. She spent the first half of her life in NYC, with intense influence from soul and Motown music. The next chunk of her life was spent in rural Minnesota where she discovered folk music, and finally settling in Minneapolis where the thriving indie hip-hop scene influenced her greatly. Her music is a mutt. A product of all these musical genres and the diversity of cultures of all the places she has lived. A little bit soul, a little bit folk and a splash of hip-hop – Claire's music has a style all its own.
"No Compass and No Commands" is a strong debut from the 19-year old songstress, an EP full of soul and raw emotion. The record as a whole follows the theme of its title track: searching, inwardly and outwardly, for one's place in the world. "I think the record really just covers the themes that young people are dealing with." Claire says. "It's about frustration with societal issues, but also just kind of about figuring out who you are and growing pains, whether that be with love or art, anything. That's where the title comes from. Like, here's this ship. No one's going to tell you where to take it or what to do when you get there."
Claire had her CD release at First Avenue & the & 7th Street Entry last month. She wowed an enthusiastic crowd of about 200. As 2009 progresses and Claire builds a fan base, we are certain this songstress will continue to charm larger and larger crowds.
