The band Terra d'..gua was envisioned and created by cello-player and composer Davide Zaccaria. This ensemble is the result of a mixture of melodies and sounds as diverse as the musicians themselves. Even though there are some earlier works from Terra d’Água – namely their participation, back in 2002, in a tribute album devoted to legendary portuguese Fado singer Amália Rodrigues – the band would surface as a consolidated project in 2004, with the release of their first album, “Viagem de um Som” (Journey of a Sound). The group consisted, at the time, of five musicians and a resident singer, Maria Anadon. Terra d’Água (loosely translatable as Earth of Water”) “stole” its name off a theme by the portuguese composer and Fado singer Jorge Fernando, a long-time friend of Davide Zaccaria, founder of the band. Starting from Zaccaria’s enthusiasm in recording a new album after moving back to Portugal, the project – initially conceived as a solo – took shape in the idea of gathering a set of musicians from the most different areas and countries, with the intent of creating a perfect harmony between a variety of music styles – such as jazz, classic, latin rhythms, improvised music and adult contemporary. Simultaneously, it “drank” the influences of the mixture of international learning experiences brought on by the natural cultural diversity of the band members. Zaccaria hoped that such a fusion would result – as it did - in a perfect combination for World Music – with full freedom, though, to spread onto other genres. For that reason, it came as no surprise when it was precisely world music that hit the spotlight in “Viagem de um Som” (Journey of a Sound) – an album that, as its own name suggests, intended to travel towards and through sound and music, with no concerns for fixed geographical references (as it is clearly seen, for instance, in themes like “Il Clown”). Ironically or not, by 2004 this “journey of a sound” (Viagem de um Som) would cause the band to fly over to Amsterdam, Netherlands, for one of the most important gigs in their career – the one that staged them at the Concertgebouw, reputed as one of the most prestigious concert halls in all Europe. Back to Portugal, Zaccaria would bring Terra d’Água to enter a four year recess, but only for the best reasons – he spent this period working and collaborating in the albums of several top acclaimed Portuguese artists, such as Dulce Pontes, Paulo de Carvalho, Maria da Fé, Ana Moura, and world-renowned fado singer Mariza, among many others. Terra d’Água would return in full force in 2007, profiting from a highly matured work, which benefited from Zaccaria’s own experience. Giving central stage to Portuguese folk, the band produced what could be considered their masterpiece to date: “A Terra do Zeca” (The Land of Zeca), a tribute album that intended to render homage to José (or “Zeca”) Afonso’s work – as a composer, a poet, and musician, with the special guest Dulce Pontes, Maria Anadon, Filipa Pais, Lucia Moniz and Uxia. Admitting that “A Terra do Zeca” reflected much of Zaccaria’s experiences over the past years, Terra d’Água‘s founder assures that “it didn’t lose connection with the project’s original concept” – a concept that Zaccaria himself likes to define as a “permanent work in progress”. With “A Terra do Zeca”, the band travelled to Italy, for the celebrations of the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union, and returned to Portugal to play in the well known “7 Sóis, 7 Luas” festival, where they were one of the top features. They also played at the inauguration of Lisbon’s Archaeological Museum, with the Portuguese Minister of Culture attending. contactos: davidezaccaria@gmail.com +351964800403
