The Daily News, Jeffrey Sisk: “Wilson St. gives every indication that Charlie Faye is the real deal and that she is a musical voice to be reckoned with.” Michael Barnes, Austin 360: “In Austin, I fall in love every night. Faye introduced her CD “Wilson St.” at Saxon Pub — and the multivarious crowd could not be more pleased.” Rock and Reprise, Frank O. Gutch: “If you have to point to one thing which sets Charlie Faye apart (and she does many things well), it has to be songwriting. Faye has an innate ability to wrap melody and harmony in a brown paper bag and make you hear gourmet. Not frou-frou and not fancy, just good and tasty." Chris Spector, Midwest Record: “Smart folk/rock that might strike you as Lucinda flavored at first but will convince you it has its own taste by the end of the journey. A winner throughout.” On January 1st, 2010, Charlie Faye pulled out of her hometown of Austin, Texas, to embark on a modern bohemian adventure. In 10 months, Charlie will make her home in 10 different towns; cities as geographically diverse as Tucson, AZ, Northampton, MA, Boulder, CO, Milwaukee, WI, and from the entertainment-industry-saturated metropolis of Los Angeles to the small town of Marshall, NC. Charlie’s tour is more like John Steinbeck’s famous roadtrip with his dog than a musician’s mad dash across the country. Instead of landing in a city, playing a show, then taking off the next day, Charlie will spend a month getting to know the people and personality of each place she makes her home. And the people along her pathway will not simply be observers of her adventure; they will be a part of the story. Traveling alone, Charlie will put together a new band in each town. Starting each month solo, Charlie will expand her performances to include her new band and before she leaves that town will record a song with that band. In addition to performing her original roots/rock music, Charlie has the goal to “teach something and learn something in each city.” She will focus on teaching music workshops, and her learning experiences will be as diverse as the towns she will call home. She will work with a carpenter, a mom-and-pop health food company, a radio station, and learn new skills all along the tour. Few people have the option or opportunity to explore America and themselves in the manner Charlie Faye will in 2010. Musicians, professionals of all types, parents and dreamers break out in large smiles when Charlie tells them about her upcoming adventure, the sort of which at one time or another, they all dreamed of doing themselves. When asked why she is choosing to tour in this unusual way, Charlie implores: “Ask any musician, on returning from a tour, ‘How was Seattle? What was Chicago like?’ – and they’ll tell you: ‘I don’t know, man, we just got off the bus and played… and then got back on the bus.’” The desire to not just skim the surface that way inspired Charlie to put together this very unique tour. In addition to putting out her new record, Wilson Street, in 2009, Charlie has become one of Austin’s most recognized music community organizers. A front-page story in the Austin American Statesman outlined Charlie’s efforts to save a musicians’ enclave of cottages in South Austin. Charlie will approach this new challenge with the same ferocity and determination with which she fought the developer who sought to tear down those cottages. Charlie’s sound is a blend of Americana; rock n’ roll, country, and blues. Channeled through her resonant, sultry voice, her songs are a reflection of the places she’s been. Young as she is, Charlie already has a rich musical history. She has toured with artists like Dan Zanes and Greg Garing, and played as a sideman with many others, including Natalie Merchant and Will Sexton. But Charlie’s own career has stepped up so intensely in the past year that she no longer has time for sideman work. This is her time. Join her on her epic journey: Travels With Charlie…
